MASON CITY – Officials didn’t take any chances Monday morning after a man was reported to be in a foul state of mind with armed weapons near an elementary school.

Monday morning for over an hour, Jefferson Elementary School – located at 1421 4th Street SE – received a request from the Mason City Police Department to hold students in the building due to safety concerns in the area.

According to Mason City police, from approximately 10 AM to 11:15 AM, police were called to a house in the 300 block of South Louisiana Ave. The resident was reported to be despondent and have access to firearms. An MCPS spokesman told NIT that “due to the proximity to Jefferson School, an officer recommended to school staff that they may want to keep the kids inside for recess.”

Parents told NIT today that students were allowed to go outside for recess in the morning and the afternoon but were called in early for only about a minute – in the afternoon.

“Lockdown was not recommended to staff as officers had the house secured but they had not been able to secure the occupant inside the house yet,” the MCPD spokesman continued. “School staff did keep the kids inside for recess today during this time but not in ‘lock down.'”

Shortly after 11 AM, officers located the troubled male resident. He was transported to the Mercy Emergency Room for evaluation.

Sources tell NIT the man had loaded weapons including a shotgun.
