Track: UNI competes at Mt. Sac Relays in Los Angeles

logo_uni_panthersCEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Senior Alex Wilson broke the school record in the 1,500 meter run at the Mt. Sac Relays today in Los Angeles, Calif., setting a new personal-best time in the event and ranking herself first in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Wilson has now been a part of breaking seven different UNI records between her indoor and outdoor careers. The senior’s time of 4:22.07 bested the previous record of 4:22.85 that she set last season at the Mt. Sac Relays.

Brandon Carnes had another successful outing at the Mt. Sac Relays, setting a season-best time in the 100 meter dash and another blazing time in the 200 meter dash. Carnes finished with a time of 20.85 in the 200 meters just one week removed from his personal-best time of 20.80 that he ran at the Husker Invite. His time of 10.46 in the 100 meter today also put him at the top of the conference this season.

Wrapping up the Mt. Sac Relays was sophomore Brette Correy in the women’s 800 meter run. The reigning MVC indoor 800 meters champion finished with a season-best time of 2:11.74, placing her in the top-five in the MVC.

The Panthers also had a group of athletes compete at the Gibson Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. today, starting out with the women’s 5,000 meter run. Kelsey Kirchoff finished fourth overall with a career-best time of 17:42.80 while Haley Stevens also grabbed a PR in the race.

Jamie Lindstrom, Sarah Pate and Chloe Schmidt all grabbed top-10 finishes in the hammer throw with Lindstrom placing fifth with a toss of 174-2.00. Pate and Schmidt both finished with PRs in the event to place sixth and eighth overall.

In the field events for the men, UNI had three student-athletes place in the top-five in the long jump, with Weston Riesselman, Shawn Koch and Derek Jacobus placed third, fourth and fifth overall. In the hammer throw, Justin Baker finished with another strong performance, placing fourth with a mark of 191-4.00.

Rounding out the day of competition was two freshmen participating in the multi-events. JC Abrahamson finished third overall in the decathlon with a personal-best point total of 5,914 while Lauren Frederick completed her first heptathlon, coming in fourth with 4,012.

UNI will return to action tomorrow when they finished the Gibson Invitational. The meet will begin at 12 p.m. with the field events and 12:30 p.m. on the track.
