Wrestling: Hawkeye sophomore Clark places second at 133 pounds, earns second All-America honor

ST. LOUIS – University of Iowa sophomore Cory Clark finished runner-up at the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Saturday night at the Scottrade Center.

Clark, the third seed at 133 pounds, dropped an 11-8 decision to Oklahoma’s Cody Brewer in the national finals.

Clark trailed 11-5 before scoring his only takedown with 40 seconds left in the third. He closed to within 11-8 when Brewer was called for stalling, but his attempts to turn the 13th-ranked Sooner stalled and time expired on the match and the season.

“I felt ready to go, but he got to my legs and I didn’t capitalize and he kept getting to my legs,” Clark said. “Once he gets there once I just have to realize that he’s coming and I’ve got to be way more ready to go than I was.”

Clark climbed three spots on the All-American stand after placing fifth at 125 last year. He finished the season with a 30-6 record, winning 13 of his last 15 matches — the only losses coming in the Big Ten and NCAA Finals.

“I don’t even really know what to say,” Clark answered when asked what he could take away from the loss. “You’ve just got to keep wrestling the way you’ve been wrestling. You can’t change the way you wrestle.”

Iowa finished second in the team race with 84 points. Ohio State won the title for the first time in school history with 102 points. Edinboro (75.5), Missouri (73.5), and Cornell (71.5) rounded out the top five.

Iowa closes the 2014-15 season with a Big Ten dual title, a Big Ten tournament title, and six All-Americans.

Four of Iowa’s All-Americans — Thomas Gilman (125), Clark (133), Brandon Sorensen (149), and Nathan Burak (197) — return next season. The Hawkeyes also return sophomore Sammy Brooks, an NCAA quarterfinalist in 2015, and sophomore Alex Meyer (174), who had two wins over top-six opponents at 174.
