Wrestling: Hawkeyes collect five pins in 44-3 victory in National Duals semifinals.

logo_iowa_hawkeyesIOWA CITY – The University of Iowa wrestling team blew by Chattanooga with a 44-3 win Saturday in the quarterfinals of the EAS/NWCA National Duals. The Hawkeyes tallied five pins during the dual, the most against a Division I opponent this season.

The Hawkeyes collected pins from Cory Clark (133), Michael Kelly (157), Mike Evans (174), Sammy Brooks (184), and Bobby Telford (285). Brooks delivered the fastest pin of the five with a 1:52 turn on Chattanooga’s McCoy Newberg.

Telford’s fall was his tenth of the season, a team best and career high. Evans’ pin was his fifth of the season, and his 99th career victory. He is one win shy of becoming the 41st wrestler in program history to reach 100 career wins.

Chattanooga won the first bout when 10th ranked Sean Boyle defeated #5 Thomas Gilman in a 3-1 overtime victory, but Iowa responded with nine consecutive wins. In addition to the five pins, the Hawkeyes got a technical fall from Brandon Sorensen at 149, and decisions from Josh Dziewa (141), Nick Moore (165), and Nathan Burak (197).

Iowa advances to face fifth-seeded Cornell in the semifinals at 3:05 p.m. (CT) on Saturday.

Second-seeded Missouri and sixth-seeded Lehigh also advanced to the semifinals. The winner of that dual will face the winner of Iowa/Cornell on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (CT) in the finals.
