Obama op-ed on War on Terror

An opinion piece by President Barack Obama appeared in the Los Angeles Times today. The text of his piece appears below:

President Barack Obama
President Barack Obama
“The United States has made significant gains against terrorism. We’ve decimated the core al Qaeda leadership, strengthened homeland security and worked to prevent another largescale attack like 9/11. At the same time, the threat has evolved. The al Qaeda affiliate in Yemen actively plots against us. Since 9/11, terrorists have murdered U.S. citizens overseas, including in the attacks in Benghazi, Libya. Here in the United States, Americans have been killed at Ft. Hood and during the Boston Marathon.

“In Syria and Iraq, the terrorist group we call ISIL has slaughtered innocent civilians and murdered hostages, including Americans, and has spread its barbarism to Libya with the murder of Egyptian Christians. In recent months, we’ve seen deadly attacks in Ottawa, Sydney, Paris and Copenhagen.

“Elsewhere, the Pakistan Taliban massacred more than 100 schoolchildren and their teachers. From Somalia, alShabaab has launched attacks across East Africa. In Nigeria and neighboring countries, Boko Haram kills and kidnaps men, women and children.

“In the face of this challenge, we must stand united internationally and here at home. We know that military force alone cannot solve this problem. Nor can we simply take out terrorists who kill innocent civilians. We also have to confront the violent extremists – the propagandists, recruiters and enablers — who may not directly engage in terrorist acts themselves, but who radicalize, recruit and incite others to do so.

“This week, we’ll take an important step forward as governments, civil society groups and community leaders from more than 60 nations gather in Washington for a global summit on countering violent extremism. Our focus will be on empowering local communities.

“Groups like al Qaeda and ISIL promote a twisted interpretation of religion that is rejected by the overwhelming majority of the world’s Muslims. The world must continue to lift up the voices of Muslim clerics and scholars who teach the true peaceful nature of Islam. We can echo the testimonies of former extremists who know how terrorists betray Islam. We can help Muslim entrepreneurs and youths work with the private sector to develop social media tools to counter extremist narratives on the Internet.

“We know from experience that the best way to protect people, especially young people, from falling into the grip of violent extremists is the support of their family, friends, teachers and faith leaders. At this week’s summit, community leaders from Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Boston will highlight innovative partnerships in their cities that are helping empower communities to protect their loved ones from extremist ideologies.

“More broadly, groups like al Qaeda and ISIL exploit the anger that festers when people feel that injustice and corruption leave them with no chance of improving their lives. The world has to offer today’s youth something better.

‘Governments that deny human rights play into the hands of extremists who claim that violence is the only way to achieve change. Efforts to counter violent extremism will only succeed if citizens can address legitimate grievances through the democratic process and express themselves through strong civil societies. Those efforts must be matched by economic, educational and entrepreneurial development so people have hope for a life of dignity.

“Finally — with al Qaeda and ISIL peddling the lie that the United States is at war with Islam — all of us have a role to play by upholding the pluralistic values that define us as Americans. This week, we’ll be joined by people of many faiths, including Muslim Americans who make extraordinary contributions to our country every day. It’s a reminder that America is successful because we welcome people of all faiths and backgrounds.

“That pluralism has at times been threatened by hateful ideologies and individuals from various religions. We’ve seen tragic killings at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in 2012 and at a Jewish community center in Kansas last year.

“We do not yet know why three young people, who were Muslim Americans, were brutally killed in Chapel Hill, N.C. But we know that many Muslim Americans across our country are worried and afraid. Americans of all faiths and backgrounds must continue to stand united with a community in mourning and insist that no one should ever be targeted because of who they are, what they look like, or how they worship.

“Our campaign to prevent people around the world from being radicalized to violence is ultimately a battle for hearts and minds. With this week’s summit, we’ll show once more that – unlike terrorists who only offer misery and death – it is our free societies and diverse communities that offer the true path to opportunity, justice and dignity.”

This kid literally said nothing new, offered no new thought to the discussion. The video has garnered the attention of the right for two reasons, 1. his age, 2. the color of his skin. You guys get all giddy when you see someone of color criticizing the president. He said that if obama “loved america he wouldn’t try to take that way”. Take what away? Repubs are even distancing themselves from Rudy’s comments. You best do the same.

What part of the ass chewing didn’t you get. To bad someone didn’t put you in your place when you needed so you would show some loyalty to America.

Your best bet is head to the middle east and join your Muslim buddies.

This kid is spot on.

Only a boo-foe can’t grasp the truth this kid is expressing.

I am beginning to think that left is one of peters alter personalities.

Oh please. Quit the LVS rhetoric and think for yourself for once. I’ll be in MC on Monday if you’d like to meet me in person.

@Lefty-stay out of our town. We have enough idiots without adding you to the mix. Traitors should be run out of the country. Watchdog is correct. Go to Syria where you belong.

@Maybe-twin sister I believe.

@Lefty-you are a fine one to talk to anyone about thinking for yourself. All you can do is parrot Philly and Obumer. All three of you deserve whatever you get. We have just about figured out who you are and where you live.

“Just about figured out who you are and where you live” is that some sort of threat? If you do figure out who I am and where I live what are you going to do then?

@Lefty-I am just anxious to meet you and see what you are really like. I like knowing who I am dealing with.

I’m really a nice family man who lived, worked, and paid taxes in MC for half of his life. My political views tend to lean left of center, especially on social issues. I’m generally fiscally conservative and hate wasteful govt spending. I do feel however that corporations and special interest money have corrupted our government on both sides of the aisle in that our government now works for them and not us.

I believe the left vs right, dem vs rep bickering that is propagated via the media serves our politicians by keeping us at war with each other, rather than at war with our politicians who seem to get nothing done. Working together to move our country forward has been put on the back burner in place political showmanship. That’s who I am and what I believe.

I believe there are all kinds of people in the world taking advantage of entitlement programs, making no effort to get off them. I also believe that entitlement programs can benefit people who are in a tough spot and working to get out. This is good for society as a whole, think of it as an investment. The problem is determining which group you are dealing with. I believe our economic system is rigged to keep the poor poor and the rich rich(er). Also the result of corp and spec ints $

I believe that too much emphasis is put on war in this country. We spend billions fighting wars around the world and don’t clean up our own problems. When we do go to war our country does not do enough to care for veterans. I think Christianity has gotten out of hand in America and hate to see our society shunning science in the name of religion. We are not a Christian nation, we are a nation free from religion, that is what our founding fathers intended. Keep religion out of politics

From what you described we would get along, there are a couple things that we disagree on but thats normal. It seems then that you seem to go way out of your way to start a fight with me, you sound like my sisters ex husband.

@Lefty-This is a side of you that I had not seen before. A lot of what you are saying is what I believe too. Possibly I have misjudged you somewhat.

@bodacious-Hello my feeble minded friend. I am so glad you chimed in with your childish, delusional comments. Did they teach you all of that in your last stay at 5 east? When are you finally going to grow up and join the real world? Take two aspirin and go back to bed and possible you will wake up sane in the morning. Be well.

I didn’t get the part where there was any real content. Sure he got real loud and said Obama didn’t love America but I really don’t get what purpose it serves. Saying Obama, or any American, doesn’t love America is the lowest of the low blows. It’s ridiculous and childish, just like the people that buy into that rhetoric. Grow up and start acting like an American. The “all men are created equal” kind of American.

They are equal until they no longer deserve to be equal. Obama, Philly and even you have given up the right to be equal. Now you are nothing but liberal sheep working hard on being liberal spoiled brats.

Ah yes, and you and your ilk are the ones who get to decide who is equal and who is not? No threats on figuring out where I live and who I am this time?

Peter and I disagreed on many things but sometimes he was civil and I could have handled meeting him but I don’t think it is a good idea if we met left.

@Lefty-A threat? Certainly not. You are not worth wasting time with a threat. I just like to know what I am dealing with, but, in your case I am pretty sure what that is.

Then why are you babbling on about finding out who I am and where I live then LVS?

Very well stated, Lefty. I felt like I was reading my own resume. The problem with eLViS is that he believes America is for those who believe only as he does. Same with Watchdog and Maybe. eLViS doesn’t know that this country was built on the principles of free speech, freedom of religion, and democracy. He thinks it was built because of him. He is the utmost danger to our free society and he doesn’t even know it.

Well put bodacious.

Like the dead cannot discern that they are dead, in LVS’s case, the stupid cannot discern that he is stupid.

LVS and his little band of misfits here are a prime example of the narrow-minded and idiotic far-right that infect this country.
They are a disease that feeds on fear and ignorance.

I am sure that LVS or one of his minions will have some feeble and very predictable response.
They can’t come up with one original thought between them.

A quote from James Zumwalt

“History supports Christianity’s evolution from a religion demanding followers’ blind faith to one nurturing independent thought and education. As such, the Christian quality of life promotes tolerance today.

Contrarily, Islam has failed similarly to evolve, banning any creative thought and limiting education to religious indoctrination. Accordingly, Islam retains for its followers the same violent Muslim mindset dominant during the Crusades.

Obama has it…

Wrong!

This guy lives in a bubble. What about the Christians that have been killed. he never mentions them. It is all about his Muslim family. He should be impeached and thrown in jail.
