What’s next: The No. 9 NIACC women’s basketball team (15-4 overall, 4-1 in ICCAC) returns to action Wednesday at Southwestern (2-16, 1-4). Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.

Last time out: The Lady Trojans topped Ellsworth 96-61 and the William Penn junior varsity 102-61 last weekend. Freshman Logan Anderson scored 24 points with a career-best 7 assists against Ellsworth. Against the William Penn JV, freshman Trudy Peterson scored 18 points and freshman Tegan Ketels scored a career-high 17 points.

Among the nation’s best: NIACC ranks first among NJCAA Division II teams with 182 3-point goals. The Lady Trojans average 85.1 points per game, which ranks third in NJCAA Division II.

Among the league leaders: Sierra Ford-Washington leads the ICCAC in scoring averaging 21.9 points per game. Anderson ranks third in the league in scoring (17.2 ppg.) Also, Ford-Washington is second in the league in steals (51). Savannah Lentz is fourth in the league in 3-point goals (48) and Anderson ranks fifth (45).

Did you know? That NIACC’s Marla Shuey was the MVP of the first NJCAA national women’s basketball tournament in 1975.

Men’s basketball

What’s next: The NIACC men’s basketball team (15-6, 3-2) returns to action Wednesday at No. 14 Southwestern (15-6, 1-3). Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Last time out: The Trojans dropped a 76-55 decision to Ellsworth and topped the Wartburg College junior varsity 91-52. Braxton Williams led the Trojans with 17 points against Ellsworth and Conor Lang scored 18 points to lead the Trojans against the Wartburg JV.

Among the league leaders: Al Davis ranks second in the ICCAC with 112 assists, which also ranks 24th on NIACC’s single-season assist list. Williams ranks second in the league in steals (52) and Davis ranks third in steals (51). Lang ranks third in the league in 3-point goals with 52.

Did you know? That the NIACC men’s basketball team owns a 50-33 all-time record vs. Southwestern.

Did you know? That Mason City Junior College first started playing men’s basketball against other junior college teams in the 1923-24 season. MCJC, which was coached by Judge Grimsley was 4-6 against junior college teams in the 1923-24 season.

Wrestling

What’s next: The No. 5 NIACC wrestling team returns action Wednesday at home against Iowa Lakes in a dual meet. The meet starts at 7 p.m. in the NIACC recreation center.

Last time out: NIACC (5-1 in duals) was 4-0 at the regional duals last Saturday in Mason City and were 37-3 in matches. The Trojans topped RCTC 38-12, Itasca 53-6, Northland 59-0 and Ridgewater 54-0.

For the record: Yoanse Mejias (157) is 20-2 … Nosomy Pozo (149) is 23-6 … Paul Mascarenas (125) is 19-6 … Shiquan Hall (133) is 22-7 … Jake Marlin (141) is 17-4.

Did you know? That NIACC heavyweight Bob Fouts won the Bruce Trophagen Award for the most falls in the least amount of time at the 1975 NJCAA national wrestling tournament. Fouts placed third at the 1975 national tournament and the Trojans placed sixth as a team.

Indoor track and field

What’s next: The NIACC men’s and women’s track and field teams return to action Friday at the Jack Jennett Invitational at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on the Northern Iowa campus.

Last time out: Freshman Imad Amenzou placed first in the 800 and first in the men’s mile at the Cornell Invitational Saturday. Amenzou, who is from Marshalltown, won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 00.00 seconds. Amenzou also won the mile in 4:28.67 as the Trojans placed fourth in the 6-team meet with 59 points.

For the NIACC women, sophomore Rellie Kaputin won the high jump (5 feet, 3 3/4 inches) and won the long jump (18-4 1/2). The Lady Trojans, who were third with 81 points, also received first-place finishes from Ellen Padmore in the 400 (1:01.21) and LaBrisha Michael in the shot put (41-1), which qualified her for the NJCAA national indoor meet.

Did you know? That Jonny Worley is the NIACC record holder in the indoor mile in a time of 4:22.21 at the Iowa State indoor meet on Feb. 8, 2013.
