Now only one insurer offering Iowans coverage through Healthcare.gov

child and doctorDES MOINES – The state has assumed control of one of the two insurance carriers that had been offering Iowans coverage through Healthcare.gov, the Obamacare website.

CoOportunity Health is no longer offered on the Obamacare marketplace at healthcare.gov (created under the Affordable Care Act), the state of Iowa announced.

Yesterday, on December 23, 2014, the Insurance Commissioner submitted a petition for an Order of Rehabilitation and the Polk County District Court issued an order appointing Insurance Commissioner Nick Gerhart as rehabilitator of CoOportunity Health, Inc.  The company will continue in existence, but the Commissioner, as rehabilitator, is granted authority to manage the company.

CoOportunity Health, Inc. did not oppose this order in recognition of the financial concerns of the insurance division.  These concerns arose due to insufficient capitalization, the company’s inability to obtain additional capitalization from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the unavailability of federal payments of the risk mitigation programs until the second half of 2015, and extremely high health care utilization.

Under this order, CoOportunity Health is no longer offering enrollments in or applications for policies on the federal Health Insurance Marketplace for Iowa for 2015.

Most policyholders may find it in their best interests to find other coverage before the end of open enrollment, which ends February 15, 2015, the state said.

CoOportunity was one of only two Iowa health insurance providers offering health insurance on healthcare.gov. The other Iowa carrier is Coventry Healthcare, which still offers policies.

A large Iowa insurer, Wellmark, has refused participation. In June, Wellmark announced it was raising premiums an average of 5.9% and would not be offering plans in the Healthcare.gov website in 2015.

Citizens can enroll for health insurance coverage until February 15, 2015. After that, you can’t get 2015 coverage unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
