Mason City man guilty in high-speed drunk driving case

MASON CITY – A man who was caught blasting his car down a busy Mason City street and was intoxicated had pleaded guilty to drunk driving.

Dustin Grant Janning, age 35, plead guilty last month to first offense operating while intoxicated. He was sentenced to 2 days in jail and ordered to pay $1,797.50 in fines and court fees. He is in jail now, and has been allowed a $50 per month payment plan. He completed a substance abuse program at Prairie Ridge.

Police put a stop to an extremely dangerous situation on the afternoon of August 6 when Janning was behind the wheel. Sheriff Kevin Pals told NIT that his deputy observed Janning’s automobile traveling east at a high rate of speed near Highway 122 and South Virginia Avenue. The deputy clocked the vehicle at 82 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour zone.

With the assistance of Mason City police, the vehicle was stopped several blocks later – past two schools – at South Illinois Avenue and Highway 122. Janning was removed from the vehicle and a field sobriety test was then conducted.

Janning was determined to be drunk and placed under arrest. He was charged with first offense operating while intoxicated, speeding and reckless driving. He still awaits trial in February on charges of careless driving and speeding.
