Mayor and council help Des Moines Register paint MC as a town full of backwater hillbillies

Mason City became a punchline and a state-wide talking point in the biggest newspaper in Iowa over RV's.

NIT Opinion –

The dividends of electing this cadre of punchinellos keep paying off for our community, this time giving the Des Moines Register plenty of ammo to make Mason City look like a bunch of delusional rubes who somehow think we are too upper-crust to have RV’s parked in our yards.

Never mind that many of these yards are strewn and littered with disgusting, unopened Mason City Shoppers. Why doesn’t the city council take action on that matter? You will plainly see the orange-bagged trash all over town after a good snow melt. Someone should tell that goofy realtor with a penchant for winking at sharp-dressed young men that if he’s truly worried about property values, the Globe Gazette’s weekly trash-distributing spree is doing more damage to his career.

Mason City Shoppers litter our streets and neighborhoods and no one says a thing about it.

Anyway, back to the Register. The writer clearly thought it was humorous that Mason City was bickering over the RV parking issue.  He drug poor old Cousin Eddie from Christmas Vacation into the fray.  Tying Eddie to Mason City was a not-so-subtle jab at this town.  What he was really saying is “Get over yourselves; you’re a small, insignificant town in a corn field run by morons and over-flowing with hillbillies and crime.  Heck, I bet half of you LIVE in RV’s … or trailer homes.  Thanks for the help on this slow news day.”

All the plastic green grass in the world can’t undo that kind of bad publicity.   The whole state got a good snicker at our expense.  All because an idiotic realtor with too much time on his hands tried to put the screws to his neighbors who just wanted to retire and be left alone.  The council and mayor took the bait and blew this ordeal out of proportion by giving it legs on council agendas.

A suggestion to all these folks: Quit being Cousin Eddies and find something more constructive to do with your time.  There are more pressing matters in Mason City than this RV issue.

@ mememe, Bitch, moan and groan. Tell me what YOU have done to make MC a better place to live.

Speaking of trashy looking…Max Weavers stone park is one ugly looking place. As I drove by I expected a raccoon to come crawling out from behind a rock. Or a backwater hillbilly bum.

So the council painted Mason city in a bad light. WHAT does this site do everyday? Inquiring minds want to know.

Is this Matt or someone else again comparing me to a junkie? And who is NIT Opinion? Is that Matt also? I find the lack of REAL names interesting since all the “anonymous” bloggers were called our for it not to long ago.

Well, that’s certainly a different take.

Thanks a lot to the hothead who jammed a house size camper into a yard only big enough for s pedal bike. He sure put others in a bind. North Penn. and other areas are much worse than by Newman high.

“Get over yourselves; you’re a small, insignificant town in a corn field run by morons and over-flowing with hillbillies and crime. Heck, I bet half of you LIVE in RV’s … or trailer homes. Thanks for the help on this slow news day.”

Although North Iowa Today certainly plays its own role in promoting MC’s small-time, hickish image by publishing page after page of meaningless crimes such as public intoxication (My God, Auntie Em, drinking, right here!), there has to be an audience for that…

Is it Mason City? Or, AS THE STOMACH TURNS.

Greetings from sunny Florida. And voters, enjoy your stench.

Sorry

Buildings on the north end coming into town are disgusting. Crime in Mason City is out of control. Our own mayor drives around drunk half the time and gets away with it. The southport shopping center is a ghost town. There are so many issues that need addressing. What the heck? Mr. Matthes you obviously have too much time on your hands to be worried about RVs that are nicer than the rentals that you and your son owns. Try cleaning up after yourself first, before attacking others.

@Anonymous-Good comment.

Great post, all very true.

The “crime out of control” argument is factually incorrect.

But beyond that, if those who repeat that statement had the necessary critical thinking skills, they perhaps would wonder who benefits from repeating it constantly.

In my book, I would say that fear is a useful tool for the political establishment. Blame those “different” outsiders for crime rather than blame the local pols for a crappy local economy. Great deflection!

@rahmbo-You give new definition to the word “IGNORANT”. Open your eyes and look around you. People like you are and always have been the problem. Blind and dumb.

If I was you, I would leave your hellhole ASAP!

and please take Matt!

There are people who are discusted with mason city and wont even shop there. Turned into crime filled scum hole. The rv thing shouldnt be worried about when there is so many other things needed to be taken care of. Judges are to easy going and criminals laugh and think it wont hurt with a slap on the wrist. Whats next gun fights in mason city streets?

@Matt-Check out the area by Mohawk Square and while you are at it drive down 9th or 10th street N.W. It is a dam shame what has happened to our city. All those fine old houses have been turned into apartment houses owned in part by out of town slum lords who could care less about maintaining them. Of course our council sits in their playpen with their heads up their butts spending thousand of dollars on painting signs for bikes in the roads.

I would be curious to know how many houses in Mason City Matthes owns as uses as rentals. And the addresses. How does someone get that information.

Property search functions are available on the city and county web pages. You can search by name.

Our main slum lord lives right here in town.

No kidding!!!

Mr. Mathes, your first name described you well!

One would have thought that those in charge would have read the code before making fools of themselves. On another note, the shopper, they’re at it again. Just drive down the street and toss them anywhere, except where they’re supposed to go. Some of them are still laying where they were tossed, on Tuesday. Now, isn’t that littering… We’ve called the Shopper on this before, they must have forgot…

We have drug houses all over town, we have children being attacked in broad daylight, we have thefts happening everywhere, we have junk cars parked in residential yards (two in the rent house next to us, we have breakins all over town and our council is worried about a lousy RV parked legally in a home owners driveway. No wonder the town is going to hell. The only good thing is Philospussv says he has left the area.

Thanks. I share your concerns and appreciate your persective on the core values of our community.
