Fire emergencies send responders racing to two locations (Photos & Video)

MASON CITY – The prospects of a single-family home on the city’s northeast side surviving a fire late Thursday seemed dim as the blaze refused to go out.

Mason City firefighters and police were called to the 400 block of 9th Street NE at about 9:50 PM for a house there “fully engulfed” in flames.  Firefighters, police and EMT’s were already across town at 710 South Pierce dealing with a 911 call for a fire at that location when the call came in.

Firefighters quickly left the scene at 710 South Pierce.  That incident involved an emergency call about smoke and a posible small fire on the first floor of that apartment complex.  Residents were evacuated, and firemen were there with a large fan, blowing smoke out of a small apartment.  The situation seemed to be in hand as firefighters weer about to head back to headquarters when the second emergency call came in.

At the scene at the 400 block of 9th NE, police were already there ahead of the fire department, which had at least three trucks traveling across town from Pierce to this location.  A man leaped into his pickup truck in front of his house, which was on fire, and quickly slammed the vehicle in reverse as police warned him the fire was severe.  Neighbors told NIT the man lived in the house alone and had a dog, which may or may not have been out of the house.

Soon, large flames could be seen flicking out of the back, top story.  Smoke was streaming out.  Firefighters converged on the area and ran to the house.  One truck was able to maneuver down the dead-end street to get close.  They poured water on the house, but the fire refused to die completely.  It seemed out for a moment, then came back stronger.  More smoke poured out of the house.  Neighbors got as close as they could, taking pictures and video of the situation.

The fire was still raging as of 11:20 PM.  More to come as information develops.
