CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 73-53 home win over the Morgan State Bears on Thursday night in the McLeod Center.

UNI had five players in double figures led by Deon Mitchell and Paul Jesperson with 13 points each. Seth Tuttle and Wes Washpun added 12 points. Jeremy Morgan reached double figures for the first time this season with 11 points.

Washpun provided a first-half spark for the Panthers as he scored 10 of his 12 in the first 20 minutes. Washpun did not miss a shot on the night as he drained all four field goals and all three of his free throw attempts. Washpun knocked in his first 3-pointer of the year as well.

Morgan State led 30-29 at the break on the strength of 15 first-half points from Blake Bozeman, son of the Bears’s head coach Todd Bozeman. Bozeman sank five triples in the first half.

UNI opened the second half on a 13-4 run to take a 42-34 lead. The run was capped by a bucket from Jesperson with 14:28 left in the game. MSU’s Clive Vaughan Jr drained a three-pointer with 12:47 remaining to cut the lead to three, 44-41, but UNI did not allow the Bears to claw any closer the rest of the way.

The Panthers used a 21-4 run from the 9:17 mark of the second half to just 55.6 seconds remaining. UNI led 50-45 with 9:17 to go and then led by 22 at 71-49 on a bucket from Wyatt Lohaus.

UNI will play at home again on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the University of North Florida Ospreys.
