DES MOINES- Police in Des Moines say a man was found laying dead in a road early Saturday morning, the apparent victim of a hit and run, and have announced that they have found the woman responsible.

At 7:06 AM Saturday morning, the Des Moines Police Communications Center received a call about a man down in the road on E. University Avenue just east of the E. 26th Street intersection.

Des Moines Police Patrol Officers and DMFD Fire medics responded and found a 55-year-old male lying dead in the road.

Evidence at the scene clearly indicated this was a hit and run collision. Also present was a license plate that was believed to be from the suspect vehicle. Officers checked the address of record for that plate but did not find the vehicle. The DMPD Communications center received a call however from a witness who provided the location of the suspect vehicle. Officers responded to that Des Moines address and impounded the pickup believed to have been driven in this collision but did not locate the suspected driver.

Des Moines police traffic investigators announced Saturday evening that they have made an arrest in this fatal collision.

Ashley Kay Brown, a 20-year-old resident of Des Moines was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and no insurance.

After Brown was identified by a witness, she turned herself in to police following calls to her family by investigators, asking to speak with her. Brown admitted to her involvement in the hit and run and being the operator of the vehicle. Neither alcohol nor drug impairment appear to have been a factor in this collision.

The victim is identified as 55-year-old Kenneth Leroy Wallace also of Des Moines. He was struck while walking on the travelled portion of the road and may have been crossing University Ave.
