Opinion: Democracy Depends on Us

vote_hereSubmitted by an NIT reader:

How many times have you turned on your TV or opened a browser window thinking “I can’t wait to hear how much candidates for elected office hate each other today!”? If you’re as big into the elections as I am, maybe you have. But for the most part, these clearly bogus intrusions into our homes have well passed the point of good taste and common decency.

Think about it for a minute – what is the point of annoying Americans by constantly shouting each other down? The cynical side of me has a strong feeling that these folks know exactly what they’re doing. Ultimately, these big money interests are changing very few, if any, voters’ intentions. Instead, they are expecting us to tune out, to give up, to not vote.

It seems impossible to work toward positive goals when all we see and hear is either angry or untrue. When we vote, elected officials know that despite the hatred we’re still paying attention. As Americans it’s not only our right to participate – it’s our duty.

Please call the campaigns of the candidates or party you support and volunteer to knock on doors and make calls to get out the vote. You don’t have to be an expert or professional at this to make a real impact. Our democracy depends on it.

One of the most difficult things a would be elected official can do is stifle the rage of righteous indignation when in the face of aggressors, polluters, abusers, the corrupt and wicked etc. It’s not easy to sit and remain calm when the world is crumbling around you. The reason Clear Lake officials sit where they do is because they’ve long given up their souls…they are empty and hollow men, with vacuous genitals…eunuchs really…YES men for the area contractors who guide them

@Philly-what difference does it make to you. They do not allow felons to vote.

@LVS….I wonder how many lifetimes he is going to be eating those sour grapes? It would have been bad enough to take the kind of beating he did in the CL council election, but he seems to take great pleasure in helping remind people that he was beat like a rented mule in that election.

PS…I know you will be shocked, (you better be sitting down for this) but the mud-hut project is finally kaput.

@Buzz-I am deeply disappointed by the news of the expiration of the Mud Hut. Whatever will Philly do when the snow fly’s and the cold wind is blowing. From what I heard he couldn’t get along with his neighbor (what a surprise) and was run out of the neighborhood. Once you start quitting and running away it becomes a habit. He will fit right in with the brain dead druggers in Colorado. If he gets out of Iowa (Which is doubtful) he will be back before Christmas.

Not entirely, but you two are sorta reminiscent of these two balcony bozos.

I wasn’t run out of the neighborhood you old salamander…I chose to go because the nutball started up so much trouble in the neighborhood that it was beyond repair, and I didn’t want to start my ministry / sanctuary around such animosity. I made a bad mistake letting him buy a piece of land…he wanted to run me out all along. Nasty POS…

old salamander, you crack me up

@Philly-That’s your story so stick to it. Your neighbor tells a different version altogether. He says you were the trouble maker what with your goofy ideas and all. Going on your history, I will believe him.

So LVS…Are you attempting to tell us all here and now that you’ve spoken with the crazy lunatic that lives in the back of the woods with all the pallets stacked high and junk strewn around? Highly doubtful old cracker. This makes you a confirmed LIAR.

@LVS….I would say that you are probably right in your assessment of what really happened in Burdette. I also doubt that he will leave. After all, he only said he was “gearing up” for a trip to Colorado. That’s actually code for….If my mom gives me enough money, I might go hang out at the mall for a couple of days.

He won’t leave, let alone, he won’t stay gone. The proof is in his history. Like diarrhea, he will be back way before you are ready for it.

@Philly-I never said I talked to him at all. Do not be putting words in my mouth. We all know how you are and that your life is in your mind and that is a sick place to be. We also know how paranoid you are and that regular honest people are very uncomfortable with you around. I am sure your ex-neighbor has his own story to tell. At least it got you off the loud pipes for awhile.

So how do you explain this declarative statement you made?: “He says you were the trouble maker what with your goofy ideas and all”.

How would you know what he says? You’re a LIAR LVS. You’ve been caught red-handed, with greased palms, dirty underwear, and chapstick on your lips.

@Philly-It was heresay only. You should know all about lying. You invented it. Why are you not in Colorado or at least on the road. Wouldn’t your Momma give you any gas money?

Vote Ernst !!

HEY VERN ITS ERNEST

I am an independent but I have been voting republican because they seem to be online with what I believe. The last few elections both parties have been doing more attacking each other rather than their politics. Instead of attacking a candidate for what they believe I wish they would just report it instead. Example Joni Ernst, the last commercial puts her down for her stance on abortion, why don’t they just say she doesn’t believe in it instead of she is out of touch.

@maybe-Most of that attack ad by a out of state Democrat Super Pak is mis-representation. They only tell part of what she has said. It is the same with the attack about social security. All she really said was social security is in trouble and we nee to look at all the options. Of course they twisted it to serve their purpose. Believe nothing that is said in those ads.

Good article. Non partisan but true.
