CHARLES CITY – A student who allegedly had a gun was taken into custody Thursday by Charles City police, sending schools into lock-down.

According to the Charles City School District, at approximately 11:20 AM Thursday, Charles City Police received a call concerning a student who was not in school. Officers were searching for the student at the parent’s request because the student was upset. The school was notified. The student eventually showed up at the Charles City High School around noon. Officers were called. The student left school grounds via the Charlie Western Recreational trail. The student displayed a firearm on the trail across from the football bleachers when stopped by police. Officers on scene were able to apprehend the student without incident and the student was taken to the Floyd County Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

One parent expressed concern, saying that she “was called to the school to pick up my sick daughter right in the middle of all of this. Even though the school was on lock down she was allowed to leave the school and walk to my car.”

A school district official said “the high school (like the middle school and elementaries), was locked. We just finished installation of buzzer entries two weeks ago. The incident was south of the high school and the police had control of the situation. Since they had control of the situation, we were not in lockdown. You were directed north out of the parking lot by Mr. Wolfe to keep traffic away from the incident.”

An investigation into the incident is on-going.
