Spanking: How much is too much?

NIT – All-time great Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been charged with a felony for beating his four-year-old son with a tree branch, leaving bloody marks across his body.  He turned himself in and sat out Sunday’s loss to the Patriots.  He’ll have his day in court.

The incident and subsequent charge have ignited a national debate on corporal punishment: How much – if any – physical discipline is allowable in today’s American society?

Some say that since they grew up with spankings, slaps, beatings, it is OK and just part of raising a child. Some may remember the punishment of going into the backyard to pick out the very switch that would be used to deliver a beating.

Others say that this type of discipline is totally unacceptable – especially in light of today’s hyper-sensitive, politically-corrrect culture – and is now criminal behavior and parents or caregivers who serve up this kind treatment should be prosecuted.

What is your opinion. Should corporal punishment be completely outlawed?  Or, should some level of spanking or other physical consequences be allowable under law for parents who want to discipline a child?

How come everyone today is too much of a pussy to smack their kids around? That’s what I want to know: why are parents afraid to beat their kids? When I was a kid and I screwed up, my parents beat my ass. We didn’t have a conversation about it. I didn’t have a “time out.” In fact, I’ve never even once been grounded in my life. What’s the point? Send your kid to his room and make him play video games and read comic books all day?

If you love your kids, love them enough to beat them.

Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

Discipline – yes. Whipping, drawing blood, causing injury – this is NOT what the Bible was talking about at all. I think you know that. (I hope to hell you do!)

18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:

First of all that is the old testament before the ultimate sacrifice of Christ on the Cross so those types of things no longer had to be done. 2nd this is a 4 year old boy not a young man who is rebellious. At the age of 4 he is barely past being a toddler. Besides the Bible also states to uphold the law of the land, the law is you don’t leave marks on your children! The bible also say love is patient kind long suffering, also states Parents are not to provoke a child to wrath. Get a grip!

I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.

This bruiser is a looser. You gotta be smarter than the switch to be a good parent.

This was not spanking. It was a beating. Meant to maime and therefore abuse.

@Joao-you need to remember he has not been convicted of anything yet. Just charged so far. If and when he is is convicted (I believe he will be) he will be punished by LAW. The NFL has no business getting involved in the law. If it is in his contract and he is PROVEN guilty then they have a right to enforce the contract.

I let my wife dish out the punishment – she was good at it – man she used liquid soap instead of bar soap – worked to – they don’t smoke – drink or show disrespect for other people – although I told them politicans are exempt.

A swat on the tush with a hand is one form of punishment. This wiping is over the line. He may be good at football but a very poor parent. Remember the child is only 4 years old. Peterson when to far and need to take his own Medicine. I will never look at him the same as I hope everyone remembers this. That child suffered greatly.

This isn’t okay for white OR black people, but it does seem that black folk have a preponderance for heavy handed corporal punishment. Some black comedians even clown on their harsh upbringings, almost fondly remembering when “Momma whooped me upside the head if I acted out of line”. The thing about “acting out of line” is there is no line. We should have freedom to explore, ask questions, learn and grow. Children become only what their environments make them to be. Peace begets peace

And, these pictures are the ones that are 2 weeks old. Imagine what it looked like when it just happened. And, u need to google more about this and read his tweets between he and his ex-wife. He stated–” I got him in the nuts once, etc etc. Could hardly understand what he was saying due to his use of Ebonics…. but u will get the jist of it…

I still haven’t heard what prompted this “beating”.

I read that he pushed one of his siblings and took a game controller away.

Spanking is one thing, although I do not go for that.

This was a 4 year old boy, that had his pants pulled down, leaves put in his mouth, whipped with a tree branch, beat bloody on the arms, legs, arms, buttocks and SCROTUM- With all AP’s kids out there, maybe he needs to be beat in the scrotum. This is child abuse, plain and simple. There is no defense for what he did. Especially since one of his little sons died at the hand of the mother’s boyfriends beating about a year ago This is…

He drew blood! That’s never okay! All he’s doing is teaching his kids that it’s okay for them to beat THEIR kids when they have them. It’s a never ending cycle of abuse that must be stopped.

I’m so sick & tired of all these sports “heroes” being above the law. It appears that things are changing for the better and it’s about time.
