Fugitive accused of murdering former Mason City man now suspected of robbing Twin Cities bank on Sunday

ST. PAUL – A man police suspect murdered a former Mason City man is now suspected in a brazen bank robbery this weekend in a Twin Cities suburb.

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota said Monday that the search for Lyle Marvin “Ty” Hoffman heated up on Sunday, August 31, 2014 at approximately 2:01 PM when officers of the Blaine Police Department responded to a bank robbery at the TCF Bank located at 331 County Road 10 NE in the City of Blaine. Video footage from the bank revealed that the robbery suspect appeared to match the description of Hoffman, the homicide suspect from the August 11, 2014 Arden Hills Holiday Gas Station murder of Kelly Phillips, formerly of Mason City.

During the robbery, the bearded suspect displayed a handgun and demanded money. Although a thorough search of the area failed to locate the suspect it is believed that both the money and suspect have been tainted with red dye from a dye pack. At the time of the robbery the white male suspect was wearing a white t-shirt, baseball-style cap, and glasses. This case is under investigation by the Blaine Police Department, Anoka County Sheriff’s Office/Crime Scene Unit, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, the BCA and the FBI.
