MASON CITY – Josh Schaer may have reserved himself a high ranking in the annals of stupid crooks by the time his latest crime is sorted out in court.
A known Mason City crook invaded a home owned by Troy Elwood at 1126 1st Street SE late Thursday night at about 10:18 PM and was discovered by the couple. Police were called and the man – later identified as 26-year-old Joshua Schaer – fled the house on foot.
Shaer wasn’t through, however, and came back at 11:46 PM. The male homeowner attempted to distract and then detain Schaer, and allegedly tackled him and held him down in the street as his wife called police. Schaer struggled with the homeowner, and then continued to fight as two officers intervened and attempted to make the arrest. Officers then deployed a taser in Schaer which ended the struggle.
Schaer was charged with 3rd degree burglary and interference with official acts and taken to jail, held on $5,300 cash bond.
Schaer is a convicted felon due to a marijuana possession with intent to deliver case and has a long criminal record. He is currently facing a third degree theft charge brought by Mason City police on August 13 and is due in court on that charge on September 5.
Regarding Schaer’s alleged trickery Thursday night, a Mason City woman said she also had a run-in with him.
“I think that I should share that he might be trying to get into people’s houses by tricking them like he did to me,” Eva Gutierrez stated via social media. “I find it sad and scary because I let this guy into our house last night and let him borrow my phone to make a phone call because he was locked out of his house, so he said. Not a smart choice on my part.”
Schaer’s girlfriend, Jolene Herrera, then fired back, saying “it was no trick he really was locked out”.
