MASON CITY – A heated argument at a local watering hole led an allegedly irate man to pitch a pool ball and then flee with his pal as cops rolled onto the scene.
The trouble started at 11:19 PM Tuesday night at Burke’s Bar, 1221 North Federal Avenue, when a person called police reporting a heated argument inside Burke’s Bar that was about to get physical. Officers arrived a few minutes later and witnesses pointed to a van that was starting to drive away from the parking lot. Officers attempted to stop the van, but the driver took off. Officers pursued, and the van failed to pull over for the police car attempting to stop it with flashing lights and sirens and continued driving for a few blocks before it finally stopped in the 1400 block of North President.
The driver, 41-year-old Nathaniel Wetter, was arrested for operating while intoxicated, failure to yield to emergency vehicle, and interference with official acts. The passenger, 39-year-old Timothy Despenas, was arrested for fifth degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication.
Witnesses reported to police that Despenas had thrown a pool ball and also threw a glass mug at the front door causing damage when he became disorderly at the bar. The damage was estimated to be under $200.00. Despenas and Wetter then left in the van as officers were arriving.
