Charles City police catch man who allegedly stole hundreds of dollars worth of tools

CHARLES CITY – A man with a long criminal record was caught by Charles City police Sunday and accused of stealing hundreds of dollars worth of tools.

According to police, officers took a report of a theft in the 800 block of South Grand Avenue on Sunday, August 24 at 2:07 AM. Police said that tools valued at about $400 had been stolen earlier in the night. Officers then canvased the area and recovered the missing items. As part of that investigation, 39-year-old Courtland Smith was arrested and charged with fourth degree theft. Smith was released from jail the same day on his own recognizance as he awaits a hearing scheduled for September 10, 2014.

Smith recently pled guilty to second offense public intoxication in connection to an arrest on February 21, 2014. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail with all but 5 suspended, a year of probation, and assessed $709.25 in fines and court fees.
