DES MOINES – A retired seed corn salesman from northern Iowa found his cure for boredom: a $250,000 lottery prize.

Donald Sandry of Goodell purchased a “$250,000 Club” instant-scratch ticket Tuesday at Kum & Go, 112 River Ave. S. in Belmond, and ended up winning the first of eight top prizes of $250,000 in the game.

“I got bored sitting at home so I went back to town again and thought I’d buy some tickets,” Sandry said.

The 81-year-old said he scratched off his ticket inside the store and immediately knew he won the game’s top prize. Sandry claimed his prize the same day at the lottery’s regional office in Mason City.

Sandry said he isn’t sure how he’ll spend all of his winnings, but a newer vehicle is at the very top of his list.

“Just something that gets me around, that’s all I care about,” he said.
The $250,000 Club is a $20 scratch game. If a player matches any of “Your Numbers” to the “Club Numbers,” he/she wins a prize. If a player reveals a “Dollar Bill” symbol, he/she wins a prize automatically, and if a player reveals a “Money Bag” symbol, he/she wins triple the prize shown. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 2.88.
