MASON CITY – Emergency responders and Alliant Energy responded to a Mason City residence Wednesday after a woman backed over her gas meter.
NIT readers said that a “think, heavy” gas smell was in the air, hovering in the neighborhood near 225 1st Street NW, where the homeowner, Rebecca Rachut, had collided with her gas meter at about 8:04 AM.
The area was cordoned off, and Fire Department personnel and Mason City police were at the scene as a precaution as Alliant Energy technicians worked to shut off the gas and make sure the situation was safe.
“Our crews responded and made repairs. The fire department did ask several residents to leave the area while our crews made the repairs,” Alliant told NIT.
The residents were later allowed back in their homes.
