NIACC sports update

What’s next: The NIACC volleyball team opens its season Friday and Saturday at the St. Cloud Technical and Community College tournament. The Lady Trojans play Iowa Lakes at 4 p.m. Friday and Mesabi Range Community and Technical College at 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday, NIACC plays Dakota County Technical College at 11:30 a.m. and St. Cloud Tech and CC at 1 p.m.
NIACC went 4-0 at the St. Cloud tournament in 2013. The Lady Trojans topped DCTC twice, Mesabi Range and St. Cloud Tech to open the season with four straight victories.
NIACC returners: The Lady Trojans return five players from last year’s team that was 15-17. The returners are Heather Danburg, Caitlyn Hanig, Brianna Haugen, Carly Ouverson and Riley Quintus.
Hanig recorded 182 kills with 200 digs, 99 blocks and 19 ace serves as a freshman. Danburg led the Lady Trojans with 423 assists and Ouverson had 396 assists.
Did you know: That Casey Spree, a two-time all-region performer, recorded 766 career kills in her two years at NIACC in 1998 and 1999. She had 440 kills in 1999 and 326 kills in 1998.

CROSS COUNTRY
What’s next: The NIACC men’s and women’s cross country teams open their seasons at 1 p.m. Saturday at the NJCAA Region XI 5-kilometer time trial in Emmetsburg.
Last year’s time trial: The NIACC women placed third at the 2013 time trial in Mason City with 80 points. Hannah Palmeter led the Lady Trojans with a fourth-place finish in a time of 21 minutes, 23.8 seconds. The NIACC men placed second at the time trial with 53 points as Jaime Zarate led the Trojans with a second place in a time of 16:39.8.
Did you know: That Palmeter became NIACC’s third cross country all-American with her 6th place finish at the NJCAA national meet last year. Anna Buenneke was a two-time all-American as she placed 8th in 2010 and second in 2011. Trent Smith was an honorable mention all-American with his 11th place finish in 2011.

MEN’S SOCCER
What’s next: The NIACC men’s soccer team opens the season at 2 p.m. Saturday at home against Century College in a nonconference contest. It will be the first ever soccer matchup between NIACC and Century.
NIACC returners: The Trojans return 10 sophomores from last year’s team that was 6-11 overall, including second-team all-region performer Nathan Spores (keeper) and honorable mention all-region defender Skyler Capelle.
Did you know: That NIACC’s all-time men’s soccer record is 111-111-10. NIACC started a men’s soccer program in 2001.
