Former NIACC standout Peterson signs with St. Paul Saints

niacc_trojans_logoMASON CITY – Former NIACC first baseman Tyler Peterson has signed with the St. Paul Saints of the American Association of Independent Baseball.

The Saints have three weeks left in the regular season and are making a push to make the league playoffs.

Peterson was a consensus NCAA Division III All-America and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the year in 2014 while playing at the University of St. Thomas.

Peterson missed the last nine games of his final college season at St. Thomas with a lacerated spleen incurred May 10 on a collision while making a diving catch. He led conference players in batting average (.471), HRs (eight), slugging percentage (.794), extra-base hits (27) and fewest strikeouts (four in 152 plate appearances), and had two errors in 310 defensive chances.

Peterson played two seasons at St. Thomas after spending two years at NIACC in 2011 and 2012.

In two seasons at St. Thomas, he batted .419 in 76 games with 116 hits, 83 runs, 97 RBI, 31 walks, 29 doubles, four triples, 10 HRs, nine steals and six sacrifice flies.
At NIACC, Peterson was a two-year starter for the Trojans at first base and a mainstay in the middle part of the order.

A two-time All-Region XI selection, he batted .390 as a sophomore with a team leading 78 hits, 20 doubles, three home runs, 39 RBI, 107 total bases, 17 walks, 48 runs scored and posted a .535 slugging percentage. He helped lead NIACC to a 37-21 record in 2012.

Peterson is one of 13 members of the NIACC 100-hit club. He is tied for ninth on the school’s all-time hit list with 112 career hits.
