Bicyclist injured at intersection after failing to yield to traffic

MASON CITY – A man was hurt Sunday when he rode his bike through an intersection with a bike path and was struck by a motorist.

On Sunday at about 2:00 PM, bicyclist Daniel Worden was riding a bicycle eastbound on the bike path in 4100 block of 19th Street SW. At the same time, a vehicle driven by Jean Anderson of Mason City was also eastbound in the 4100 block of 19th SW and turned south on to Eisenhower as Worden rode his bicycle. Police said that Worden’s bicycle collided with the rear fender of Anderson’s car. The bicycle trail has a yield sign posted at this intersection for bicyclists to yield to vehicular traffic before entering the intersection.

Worden had an injury and was said to be unconscious for a time, but was not transported by the fire department to a hospital. At the scene, Worden could be seen holding a bloody towel to his head, but seemed to be okay.

No citations were issued.
