It seems to me that one of the things Matt was contemplating doing away with were posts that did nothing but slam another person, adding nothing to the conversation. This would be one of those posts.

@bodacious-You are correct. That was supposed to be the rule, but, Philly is allowed to attack everyone so what is the point of staying within the rules. Rules have to be enforced the same by all party’s or else they are a waste of time.

Thanks everyone for another coffee brainstorming session. I rather enjoy my interactions (from a distance),but I’ve got to set down the Chromebook and get some work done before my nanny gig begins. btw. Buzz, I filled up with gas at the convenience store I used to work at, and sadly the sign for the graveyard shift is still on the door. It seems like my assessment of the poor wages offered are holding true. I gave them a whole slew of suggestions on my outtake interview. I come across as an ego hit to people in power who aren’t used to getting spoken to as equals…but they’re absorbing what I say…sooner or later.

My response ratio has been 1 out of 75 posts, hasn’t slowed him down at all.
For every Clint Eastwood there’s a Robin Williams. Some talk slow and choose their words carefully, others rattle off a million words a minute. It’s a big diverse world. Can you imagine if there were only a few species of animals as compared with the millions and counting? Rabbit, squirrel, deer, skunk, mouse…The mind is a lot like the diversity and plethora of species…it’s endless. So instead of trying to restrict the flow for everyone, reconcile, and find your own speed.
I think Katie mentioned creating a “block” feature where registered users could block someone. I think this is a smart idea that NIT engineers should consider looking into. There are many engineering features that could be added to make the overall experience on NIT more interesting and ergonomic. Matt talked about doing some things, and I think upgrading the technology user features for account holders should be a big part of any new designs. Give people the power. I’m all for it.

I was just thinking of a response 20 minutes before you wrote the comment (my precognition flares up at times). I thought how lame it was getting beat over the head with my choice to live with family members while I tried innovative pursuits and endeavors. And as I was depositing mineral spirits into the porcelain for the 4th or 5th time today I thought to myself “We all stand there trying to hit the target. Priest, businessman, landlords, judges…doesn’t matter if they are well dressed or sophisticated…at some point it’s just them and their shriveled up snout standing over a white or stainless steel trough.” The more sophisticated and classy the person, the more ludicrous the vision becomes. That to me is an equalizing effect.
And I had a vision of some sort of defense by you as a premonition of what you would come back with for a retort, so I wrote down my response to that in a sealed envelope. As I remove the card from the envelope, the text on it is as clear as when I wrote it. It says, “#EpicFail”

Open up the character count to 2000 specific to those areas. Keep profanity and blocked word filters ON, but try to let the best you can free speech to flow…insults and all. Perhaps you can assign moderators to each respective forum.
The major dispute results from the mixing of ideologies within the whiner’s den. Oil and Water do not mix. So if you create distinct areas for those ideologies to dominate and flourish, it will satisfy the burning need to be heard and to dominate within one’s respective viewpoints. Libs could enter the Conservative Corner but it would be at their own risk, and the Conservative assigned moderator could flush their comment if they chose…vice versa for the Liberal side.

It’s like the “news story” about Callanan’s wife getting hired for the North Iowa Corridor. A user had to point out in the comments that she was actually qualified for the job. Something NIT did not research. It was seen as an opportunity to create scandal by insinuating that the hire was based simply on her husband. NIT really wants people to believe there is trouble in River City when in fact the trouble is NIT.

I think adding a “Like” button to individual comments would be nice. I think there are many people out there reading who support and agree with individual comments but who don’t take the time to comment or want to reveal themselves. I realize there are lots of neocons on this website, but I think there’s some open minds out there also passively enjoying the ride.
I also think it’s time to force a registration of some kind and disallow posting under anonymous name. IT doesn’t have to be a FB login…but it should force someone to register and create a name, without duplicate monikers being used. You need to get a handle on all the anonymous characters out there who repeat post under made up names.You’ll gain more than you’ll lose. If you can confine anonymous posters to one specific area it would keep the rest of the site clean.

It saddens me that some humans are still filled with hatred and vengeance; it is a sorrowful state. Now that I’ve transcended gutteral men, I forget how bad it used to be. I live and work within gated communities, surrounded by professional people, and their civility is priceless. I drive a beat up old crappy car, which flies around the turncircles. Ferraris and Lambs sometimes pass me. I don’t mind if people have their bikes…as long as they don’t violate people’s inner peace.
It’s really windy here, but the air is warm and dry. I had a good couple days cleaning and organizing the doctor’s house. He just returned from California and he rewarded me with $120. I built him a kitchen eating counter and installed it with brackets: great space saver. He wants me to continue building it out as an L shape. I’m appreciated and loved by my new family. You know the Convenience Store really only netted me $50 a day. That’s only $1000 a month. Unbelievable.
On another note. I am brainstorming ideas to make NIT better.
First, let me say, any ideas from our loyal readers are welcomed.
Second. One idea I have is to bring in “editors” from our growing readership. People who want to contribute to NIT in some- or any -way. This could be in minor news gathering (a photo, a few sentences sent by email, just to get a story off the ground), news tips, leads for advertising, leads for new subscribers – anything that helps grow NIT readership, contributes to our daily content, and helps grow our advertising base. Not an everyday task, necessarily. Perhaps just 3-4 times a month, a contribution to NIT is made by these “editors”. Their cumulative efforts would be a real enhancement, I believe.
The question is, what would it take to bring in these types of folks? I can definitely offer a free subscription, for starters. We do have other perks, such as gift certificates to restaurants, other places. Perhaps some folks simply would enjoy making contributions. Any ideas – or interest in this – is appreciated and would be confidential. You can leave comments below or email to northiowatoday@gmail.com.
@N.I.T.-I would think a free subscription would be a good start. People with varied interest would be very good. Possibly you could arrange discounts of some sort with your advertisers.
@LVS…Just think, there could be a section on building (and/or abandoning) a house made out of tires. There could be a section on crapping oneself in public. There could also be a section on how to be a total drain on society and a prophet all at the same time.

I only weigh the CONTENT in the COMMENT. If the content sucks, it is gone. If it makes me chuckle, adds to the discussion, has little or no attack in its nature, it will likely make the cut and be restored to the site. If your comment gets deleted, do not blame NIT. Blame yourself for not writing witty or intelligent enough comments. End of weekend rant.

When he’s on his euphoric rant high on whatever saying , I’m the great Philosophous, and going on a tangent calling other posters nazis, vulgar names, etc. And his posts are the same thing over and over saying basically nothing. When he’s talking about putting up some shelves, or his private life that no one cares about and it pertains to nothing, you don’t delete them. This is why he says whatever he wants on here, you let him.

Did anyone notice the lonely parade for the North Iowa Bulls when their bus came into town? They won a national title but no one went on their parade. IT was just their bus and a MCFD fire truck. Went out to fairgrounds and no one was their either. Kinda sad.
What should the character limit be for comments? 500? 1000? 1500? 10,000? Explain why, and maybe I’ll make the change.
I think the character count should be set to 1500. That equals about 3 current comments in size rolled into one, minus the title/time/date/header info. Plus it will diminish the amount of times you see someone’s name in the feed. I found that after about 1000 characters, I’ve mostly finished my thought. It’s just a nice option to have, and I’m sure most of the people won’t go over 300. The current character count is actually about 486 because for some reason it makes you leave 14

I think that 1000 character limit would be just fine.
Sometimes with the 500 limit, you need to cut things out but are pretty close to what is needed to comment and express your thoughts.
Personal opinion, anything over 1000 is getting too winded and that is more like a sermon.
I’m leaning toward going to 1000 characters.
I also agree with this statement; once in awhile, it does take more than 500 characters to make a point. Maybe we can experiment with 1000.
The 486 character limit was a good exercise and it made me a sharper writer. But I concur with the 1000. A lot of times I was on the verge of finishing a thought, and I’ve been cut off. It will help reduce the number of times you see my name in the feed. I like more in depth thoughts, and if people don’t like a writer…just skip over it. Even 750 would be better than 486. And can you make it a true number because the 14 remaining confused people. Why can’t it just say 0 remaining?
I would like to see the character limit stay at 500. If you can’t get your point(s) across in that amount of space, then maybe you should re-think your posting. Everyone knows there is ONE person on here that can’t say “hi” in 5 minutes, so if the limit was 21,000 characters, it still wouldn’t be enough for him.
The amount of times we see ONE persons name in the feed would be minuscule compared to the amount of space they would still hog up on your site.
Yes that is the current train of thought. 500 characters or more seems to make people skip those longer comments. So, they turn out to be a waste of time for the person writing them. Concise is (usually) better. Plus, sometimes, longer comments get lost when the writer hits the “reply” button. That can be frustrating.
I don’t think it should be increased at all. Having the limit keeps people from going on tangents and rants. Keep it short and simple. If it’s raised, Phili will keep posting 50 posts a day, they will just be longer.

Who else got new assessments on their houses from the city auditor? Seems like a scam to me. I’m just glad all the auditors have been able to stay out of jail long enough to drive around and spy on everyone’s property and decide to raise our taxes.

@Matt-I received one too. I was glad to see it as mine went down substantially. Of course I had sent her a letter some months ago asking her why there was such big difference from what a realtor said my house was worth and what the city had it valued at. I for one am glad she was here to straighten it out. Of course if it had gone the other way I would have been upset.

At one time you were able to appeal the amount. Once they had our basement as being a finished basement and it wasn’t. I appealed it, and they came and checked and then it was lowered. Not sure how to go about it now. That was about 10 years ago.

Hey, a counter isn’t a bad idea. However what’s the point then? To get into a meaningful conversation about a topic or to just drop a blurb and move on? Okay, so give subscribers a certain number over non subscribers and try it. If you are referring to me as being “selfish” in your comment you may be surprised to learn free speech isn’t the only issue of contention: fairness and consistency takes precedence when 100% free speech is not attainable. You are correct this is a private website, but Matt’s angle is that he is more open and fair than the Globe Gazette, so if he does have limits to topics then he and he alone should declare what those are…not you nor anyone else.
I want more free discussion than the Globe could ever stomach, but not at the cost of driving people away from the site. If everyone would play “nicer” with each other and respect this site, there wouldn’t be a problem. It seems that at times I am watching 6th graders going at each other. “You’re a bigger poophead than so and so.” “I am not, you are”. “Am not” gets really old after a while and I have quit reading some threads because a person can’t talk about the issue without the conversation falling into that kind of back and forth badgering. The truest test to the virtuous infallibility of the United States Constitution is to allow free speech to discuss the very existence and truth of the United States Constitution itself. If free speech is indeed an inalienable right then surely it will survive irregardless of parchment paper written. My discussing the very laws that society is built upon is the perfect litmus to whether those laws are good, bad, or neither.
And for this examination, I have been subjected to an endless barrage of Cerberus attack dogs who won’t even allow a mere discussion to commence about the framework this society is constructed upon. #maybe: I don’t want to get rid of all rules. That’s absurd. I like rules that protect civilization and honor basic agreements. But I disagree with drug rules currently drafted because I feel the focus should be more on what actual harm a person causes by their drug use, rather than the act of ingesting a substance itself. I’d even be in favor of increasing penalties for other crimes if it can be shown they were under the influence. No problem with that.
Let’s take for example the guitarist David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. If David uses cocaine and then takes to the stage and performs in front of tens of thousands of people to their delight for 3 hours, why would the government concern itself with trying to prosecute him? Similarly if someone snorted some cocaine and walked around on a warm summer night enjoying the effects of the depression stripper, why should he be subject to a police shakedown and arrest?
Could it be because this society is so naturally anti-social and expectations of hostility are almost encouraged upon chance encounters with others? Just because someone is on cocaine doesn’t mean they should act like a drug crazed lunatic. Sigmund Freud did cocaine in volumes and used it for great introspection and psychotherapy. These stereotypes need to be reversed, and the behaviors of the general population need to be less suspicious and more neighborly.

A couple years ago the city contacted me and said that 1 of the trees by my house they were going to cut down because it was malformed and it would help the other trees but they never did. A couple weeks ago alliant called and said they were going to do some trimming on my trees so I would guess that it would be one of the 2.
I understand that but the whole block.
After 2 years they are finally getting around to cutting that tree of mine down.
@Maybe-Alliant will only trim around the power lines. If the tree is in the parking it belongs to the city and they will take it down if needed. I have been trying to get them to take down the tree in my parking for years and they won’t do it. They might be taking down ash trees.
What do you mean by parking? The tree that was cut down today was on the outside of my sidewalk.
@Maybe-That is the area called the “parking”. Why it is called that I don’t know. I have heard it called that ever since I was a kid. It is city property but you are responsible for maintaining it. Go figure.
Have you ever wondered why a county employee son’s is never arrested? Instead of arresting this wanted person, the county deputies tell the employee to hide his son and to call the county attorney Carlye Dalen to work out a deal! He has been on the warrant list since January 15th… but the county doesn’t care even when they know where he works and lives! This is NOT right!! He works at Culvers here in mason city and county law enforcement has told the employee that it is no big deal because its only a probation problem!

I went to Menards today, and as I walked up to the building I saw our wonderful dog catcher’s vehicle setting in front of the building by the exit door. As I walked by, I noticed that no one was inside, but the motor was running. When I went in I looked around to see if I could find her. She was in the carpet section, must have been checking out some carpet for the dog kennel. I have to say that in all the years that I have been going to Menards, I have never seen a stray dog around there.
Sounds like the HR person at city hall should look into this incident, but I am told this employee is above reproach and no one will even question her about anything. Just more dysfunction from our city hall.

My question. Why was the vehicle running? Not only using gas, but isnt that a security issue? What if someone would have stole the truck. Granted, it’s unlikely, but it could happen. Wouldn’t that be at her fault, keys in the ignition, and running. Seems like she gets away with way too much.
@LVS I forgot to mention, I’m glad we agree on something. @Maybe I also grew up on a farm and remember the drudgery such as cleaning out the hog house in the spring. I think I was 8 years old the first time. My dad handed a shovel and fork to my brother and me and said have at. Stacking hay in the barn on 90 degree days in July was allot of fun. So I have some perspective. Today’s big farm operations are no different than any other industrial organization and we should treat them as such.
Growing up our landlord owned 6 farms but I remember him and my father talking about the farm subsidies and he said he didn’t take any. My father and my siblings worked for him in the summer walking beans, milking cows, and everything else you did on a farm. The job I hated the most was picking up rocks.
@Griz-where I didn’t grow up on a farm I did work on my Uncle’s farm from the time I was seven or eight years old. And, it was the old way of cutting and baling. He had 300 head of hogs and two hundred head of milk cows and I helped clean, milk, herd an vaccinate all of them. It was hard work but he gave my dad eggs and meat for my work. I baled hay from the time I could first get on the rack and before that stacked in the barn. It was a different way of life back then. I did custom baling…

The description of the farmer being the sturdy yeoman of the earth, steward of the soil just does not apply today, if it ever did. I don’t know how they can keep a straight face when they say it. I also don’t know why the public buys into it. They wear out our roads and bridges burning their tax exempt fuel, foul our waters and pollute the air. Subsidized crop insurance is a bigger rip off than direct payments. They sold us another bill of goods. Don’t even get me started on my ethanol rant.

In Iowa a little over 13% of the people are getting food stamps. However, that 13% is costing the rest of us over 50 million dollars p/year. Hell of a lot cheaper to give them jobs and let them pay their own way and also pay taxes. Just saying.
Many of those people already have jobs but don’t make enough money to make ends meet. Some of them are the elderly who are on fixed incomes without the benefit of a pension or the jobs they held didn’t allow them to save much for retirement.
@bodacious-I agree there are some that really need the help and I have no problem helping them at all. There are lots of people on Social Security getting %1,000 a month and that is all they have to live on and that is disgraceful. There are also a lot of people drawing food stamps that are taking advantage of the system and are completely capable of getting another job or just plain going to work at all. I am not talking about retired people here. I think you know what I mean.
I have no issues with the single mother who is working a full time job, and no child support from dead beat fathers getting assistance. I have no issue with elderly getting assistance. I have issue with the people that REFUSE to get a job, can afford cigarettes, beer and have tattoos all over their body and need assistance. And keep having children that they cant afford to take care of, and we are footing the bill. And they use their food card for pop, candy and junk food.

Sorry @Maybe. Just a little rant. I’ve worked since I was 16. I’ve never taken a government hand out. Never been on assistance. I’ve worked for everything. To feed my child, keep the lights on, and keep food on the table. I live on my own and have done so since i was 19. I paid for two years of college, which I don’t even use now. So when I see the system being abused, it just kind of ticks me off.
“LVS” I agree everyone should work and this seems likes a lot of money, but how much do we give Iowa farmers in free hand outs. I believe we need to stop giving welfare money to all them also along with corporate America they all have their hands out. Between farmers and corporations I would be willing to bet its over 50 million a year in free money. So who is really the free-loaders?

@Maybe-Sorry-I looked at it but didn’t find anything on farm subsidy. I personally have a problem with subsidizing when they run around in brand new pick ups, have winter homes in Florida and fly there in their personal air planes. They have gotten rich over ethanol and still want more and more. Our food prices have skyrocketed in the last few years but yet we subsidize them.

@Maybe-OK, I read it and my opinion has not changed. As a matter of fact it just convinced me more that giving millionaires subsidy’s is wrong. we are guaranteeing them a profit. Do they give money back if they sell their crops for more than the government guarantee’s? We are rewarding them for following the rules and guaranteeing them for making bad decisions. That is not the way other business works and farming shouldn’t either.
You are missing my point, these knowitalls were saying that all farmers are receiving subsidies, I grew up on a farm and knew quite a few farmers and I didn’t know any then or any now that are receiving subsidies. I did read about quite a few millionaires and billionaires that bought farms and are receiving subsidies though.

The farmers that I know are all in winnebago county and they are not on the program but there are alot of farmers out there that I don’t know.
I didn’t realize there were that many farmers in this area on the program. I am friends with around 20 farmers in winnebago and worth county and none of them are on the list but there was 3 people that I know but am not friends with that are on the list and I can guarantee you they are not rich farmers.

I’m going to make an observation. What is it with so many men growing beards? Is it because of the popularity of Duck Dynasty? Some men look quite nice with a beard, if it’s kept trimmed nicely. But some look pretty bad. Am I the only one noticing this trend?
