MASON CITY – An investigation into the cause of a fire last week at a Mason City apartment house has been completed and Fire Marshal Mark Christiansen has released the findings.
On July 19th, the Mason city Fire Department responded to a fire at 417 2nd Street NW, owned by Travis Bailey of Mason City. Firefighters entered the two-unit apartment dwelling and at first found little evidence of a fire. Firefighters also were on the roof seeking the source of smoke seeping out of the building. The interior crew cut a hole in the living room ceiling with a chain saw and encountered heavy fire. Two firefighters were overcome with heat and were transported to Mercy Hospital. The fire was eventually extinguished and an investigation unto its cause was undertaken.
According to the fire report, the cause of the fire was listed as unintentional and attributed to faulty electrical wiring that came into contact with fabric or insulation that was then ignited.
The fire caused about $15,000 in damage to the building.
