Hall of fame induction ceremony cancelled after former Twin Knoblauch allegedly assaults wife

MINNEAPOLIS – A former Minnesota Twins hero-turned-villain that was set to be inducted into the team’s hall of fame has been arrested for assaulting his wife and the team has decided to cancel his induction ceremony.

According to reports, 46-year-old former Twins second baseman Chuck Knoblauch was arrested Wednesday at his Texas home after an alleged assault involving his former wife, Cheri.

According to Houston TV station KTRK, Knoblauch “allegedly grabbed her and smashed her head against a wall before throwing a humidifier at her… leaving a large bruise on her arm, a larger scratch on the left side of her face and a knot on her forehead.”

Knoblauch was a fan-favorite second baseman until he demanded a trade to the New York Yankees in 1998.  He was relentlessly heckled every time he played in Minnesota after the trade.  Later in his career, he developed the “yips” and many times couldn’t complete a throw from second base to first base.

“In light of recent news reports surrounding Chuck Knoblauch, as well as direct communication with the former Twins second baseman, the Minnesota Twins have decided to cancel the team’s 2014 Hall of Fame induction ceremony scheduled for August 23 at Target Field,” the team said in a statement.

Founded in 2000, the Twins Hall of Fame has 26 current inductees including players, managers, broadcasters, owners and members of the ballclub’s front office.
