Hawkeye track teams earn academic honors

logo_iowa_hawkeyesIOWA CITY – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Wednesday that UI student-athletes Kevin Lewis, Annemie Smith, and Jasmine Simpson have been named to the 2014 USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field team.

To qualify for individual honors, student-athletes must have qualified for the NCAA Championships while carrying a minimum 3.25 grade point average.

Smith was named to the academic team for the third straight year. The human physiology major set a school record and qualified for the NCAA Championships in the hammer while compiling a 3.57 grade point average.

Lewis and Simpson were both named to the all-academic team for the second time in their respective careers. Smith compiled a 3.51 grade point average and graduated with B.A. in English and secondary education. She qualified for the NCAA Championships in the hammer. Lewis qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 meters while maintaining a 3.37 grade point average in electrical engineering.

The USTFCCCA also honored the Hawkeye women as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field team for the 10th straight year. To qualify for that distinction, the team must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher.
