PHILADELPHIA, PA – Senior running back David Johnson has been named to the 2014 Walter Payton Award Watch List, it was announced today by The Sports Network.

This marks the second year in a row that the Clinton, Iowa native has been named to the distinguished list. The Walter Payton Award is given out to the top-FCS offensive player each season with 20 student-athletes making the Watch List before the season begins.

Johnson joins former UNI Panthers Dedric Ward (1996), Ryan Helming (1999, 2000), Terrance Freeney (2003), Eric Sanders (2007), Chad Rinehart (2007) and Tirrell Rennie (2011) who have also made it onto the award watch list. Sanders finished second in the voting in 2007 and Rennie placed 12th in the voting process in 2011.

The preseason awards have been rolling in for Johnson after being named to the College Football Performance Awards Running Back Award Watch List. He was also named to the Sports Network Preseason All-America first team.

The senior will look to continue his stellar career during the 2014 season after leading the team in rushing yards with 1,286 in 2013. He added 393 yards through the air for a staggering 1,679 all-purpose yards.

He started 10 games for UNI and led the team in touchdowns with 14. He is now fourth all-time at UNI in career rushing yards, tied for fourth in career rushing touchdowns and is just one of three players in UNI history to record at least 1,000 yards receiving and 1,000 yards rushing in a career.

Johnson and the Panthers will open the 2014 season on Aug. 30 against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
