Iowa’s newest prison will not open on time

jailFORT MADISON – The new $130 million Iowa State Penitentiary (ISP) is almost complete, but officials announced that its opening will be delayed unto the geothermal system is working properly.

According to Fred Scaletta of the Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC), following an internal inspection and testing of the geothermal system at the new ISP in Fort Madison, the Iowa DOC has decided to delay opening the new facility until the geothermal system can provide the required heating and cooling levels.

Currently, the geothermal system is functioning; however, the system does not provide the required levels of heating and cooling for the extreme weather sometimes experienced in Iowa.

ISP staff and State officials are working with all contracted parties to bring a very complex, energy efficient system fully on line as soon as possible.

When finished, the geothermal system will provide an economical means for heating and cooling the new ISP.

The delay in opening the new ISP means that the current 175 year old prison will be kept operational until the geothermal issue is resolved.

ISP staff will continue to train at the new facility in preparation for the movement of offenders into the new prison.

The geothermal system in the new administration building is operating properly. Several administrative staff have already occupied their new offices.

The DOC is looking forward to moving the remainder of the ISP staff and all of the offenders into the new facility.
