MASON CITY – A male pedestrian has died after being struck by a van on South Monroe Avenue Tuesday evening.
At 6:42 pm, Mason City Police and Ambulance were dispatched to the 900 block of South Monroe for a car / pedestrian accident.
According to police Wednesday morning, Gayle Shatek of Mason City was driving a Honda Odyssey van northbound in the outside lane of the 900 block of South Monroe Avenue when her car collided with a pedestrian who was walking on or into the roadway. The pedestrian, Clyde Parker Jr., suffered serious injuries and later died at Mercy Hospital.
At the scene Tuesday evening, police had all of South Monroe blocked off, from the south side of Elmwood Cemetery’s south entrance north to Schukei Chevrolet. Shatek was being escorted and questioned by police officers, while other officers did more investigating.
Parker was taken right away by ambulance to Mercy Medical Hospital. The word NIT received is that Parker was a Beje Clark resident.
A couple pulled up in their car and made the comment, “We had just went down S. Monroe shortly before this and saw a man walking. He was wearing dark clothing and we almost hit him.”
Mason City police said Tuesday before 11 PM that immediately after the incident, paramedics arrived on the scene and began treatment on Parker. Mason City police accident reconstructionists were called to the scene to investigate the accident. The investigation is on-going at this time. Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area and witnessed a pedestrian in the street at the accident location to call 641-421-3636 and talk to police.
