Stone Temple Pilots sue former frontman Weiland

LOS ANGELES, May 26 (UPI) — Stone Temple Pilots sued former frontman Scott Weiland for allegedly using the band’s name to promote his solo career even though he was fired from the band.

Three original members of the band — Robert DeLeo, Dean DeLeo and Eric Krez — and new frontman, former Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington, filed the suit Friday, accusing Weiland of breach of contract, E! Online reported Saturday.

They accuse Weiland of using the band’s name and songs and have asked a judge to prevent him from doing so, the entertainment news website said.

The suit accuses Weiland’s lawyer of calling the head of programming at Los Angeles radio station KROQ, trying to keep the station from playing Stone Temple Pilots song “Out of Time” because it infringes on Weiland’s rights.

The DeLeos and Krez fired Weiland from the 90s-era band in February, saying they would “no longer be held hostage by a band member who continually puts his personal interests above those of the band.” They said he was continually late to performances and cost the band millions when he failed to commit to their 2012 tour schedule.
