Harkin Welcomes Trade Assistance for Former Sioux City Delta Workers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) on Friday welcomed the news that displaced workers from the Delta Airlines Reservation Sales and Customer Call center in Sioux City are now eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). The announcement came from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Delta announced plans to close its Sioux City call center on April 10, 2012. Harkin is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

“Today’s funding will offer much-needed support and job training for Iowans affected by Delta’s call center closing in Sioux City. Through this training and support, these displaced workers across the state can learn new skills, get back on their feet, and continue to support their families,” said Harkin. “This is precisely the kind of investment in local, American workers that we need during difficult economic times.”

As a result of this declaration, workers are now eligible for federal assistance including income support similar to extended unemployment insurance, training assistance, case management services, out-of-area job search and relocation allowances, wage insurance for workers over 50 years old, and a tax credit for health insurance premiums.
