logo_iowa_state_cyclonesIRVING, Texas- Iowa State freshman Georges Niang was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week, announced today by the league office. Niang was picked by a select panel of media who cover Big 12 hoops.

A native of Methuen, Mass., Niang helped Iowa State split a pair of games during the week, averaging 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He also shot 55.6 percent from the field and 88.9 percent at the free-throw line.

The 6-7 power forward received his second career start at No. 6 Kansas, tallying 13 points in ISU’s overtime loss in Lawrence. Niang scored the first eight points of the game for the Cyclones and grabbed seven rebounds vs. the Jayhawks. He followed that game with a career-high 18 points vs. Texas, as the Cyclones increased their homecourt winning streak to 16 games with an 82-62 victory.

Niang, who was 5-of-7 from the field vs. the Longhorns, has scored in double figures in six of his last seven contests and ranks third on the team in scoring at 11.5 ppg.

Niang is the third Cyclone to earn a weekly honor from the Big 12 this season. Will Clyburn was rookie of the week on Dec. 3 and Melvin Ejim was player of the week on Dec. 17.
