Court will consider BP guilty plea agreement; $4 billion on the line

WASHINGTON – U.S. District Court has set a January 29, 2013 hearing to consider BP Exploration and Production, Inc.’s guilty plea agreement.

U.S. District Court Judge Sarah S. Vance has scheduled a hearing in U.S. District Court in New Orleans, Louisiana, for January 29, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. to consider the guilty plea agreement entered into by BP Exploration and Production, Inc. (“BP”), pursuant to which BP would plead guilty to a fourteen-count information charging BP with felony manslaughter, felony obstruction of Congress and violation of the Clean Water and Migratory Bird Acts and pay criminal fines and other penalties totaling $4 billion. Any written submission by a victim must be received by the Court by January 16, 2013. If any victim wishes to be reasonably heard in person at the January 29 hearing, the victim must notify the victim witness coordinator by January 22, 2013. On November 15, 2012, BP Exploration and Production, Inc. (BP) agreed to plead guilty to felony manslaughter, environmental crimes and obstruction of Congress and pay a record $4 billion in criminal fines and penalties for its conduct leading to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster that killed 11 people and caused the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history. The 14-count information, filed in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Louisiana, charges BP with 11 counts of felony manslaughter, one count of felony obstruction of Congress, and violations of the Clean Water and Migratory Bird Treaty Acts.
