MASON CITY – Naomi Olson of Mason City can rest a little easier now that her her husband has won his unemployment benefits.
Naomi’s husband, Matt, who is disabled, was fired from his job at the Globe Gazette as ad inserter on July 20th, 2012 for what the Globe called “misconduct.” Naomi described Matt as a good employee who worked at the Globe for almost 5 years and had “volunteered to work days and nights (while) they were looking for someone on nights.”
According to the Iowa Workforce Development Unemployment Insurance Appeal, a co-worker told Matt his work looked “like crap” and he then called her a “bitch.” According to the appeal, Matt was suspended by the Globe 3 days later and told to “come back on Friday to learn his fate.” When he came back, he was terminated.
The Globe Gazette then sought to deny Matt his unemployment benefits.
However, an administrative law judge concluded that Matt was “discharged for no qualifying reason” and is eligible for his unemployment benefits. “The employer’s account may be charged for benefits paid for Mr. Olson.”
Speaking to Naomi, she said “Matt continues his job search with great expectations.”
