VIDEO: Rap artists “Guns and Ammunition” entertain M.C. neighborhood

by Matt Marquardt -

MASON CITY – You can meet some interesting folks in this town if you broaden your horizons.

Early this morning on Mason City’s 15th Street NE, a group of young men were rapping on their front porch.  I asked them if they would like to perform for the whole world and agree to go on camera.

Three of the rappers agreed, calling themselves “Guns and Ammunition.”  The hastily assembled trio consisted of “Cobalt,” “Snoogins the Mad Scientist (the beat artist),” and “Carleton.”  They then  launched into a rap song they made up on the fly, including all the lyrics.

This is called “cypherin’ freestyle” or “freestyle rap,” sometimes known as “battle rap” or “battle rhyming.”  If you saw the movie “8 Mile” you would have seen a similar style of music in that film.

(PHOTO: “Guns and Ammunition” is, left to right, “Snoogins the Mad Scientist,” “Carleton” and “Cobalt.” )

Take a peak at the following video, and I warn you, if you dislike profanity, or if there are children around, do not press play.

Wow! This is horrible, I literally think I would rather choose to cut out my own eardrums out then listen to this again. Cobalt at least sounded decent… I will give him that.

How is this not promoting something positive? This is obviously something they are passionate about…and I do not see any drugs or alocohol in this video. Seems pretty positive to me… Its showing the youth to have a hobby.

we are youth of mason city and we were having fun how is that not positive we were just playing around how is you telling us to stop having fun of any sort going to be a positive thing maybe you should do something positive for the youth of mason and stop telling people to stop what they are doing why dont you volunteer as a fire fighter or something since you want to help people so much all weve gotten from the people here is negative like being robbed multiple times in a month we used to have equipment but that and all of our beats were stolen so how is us making noise a problem to you

I enjoyed this video. It gave me a nice prospective of what some people call entertainment. Two comments I would make to the “performers” though. First of all, I would instead work on your ability to articulate the question “would you like fries with that?” This seems to be the career that you would excel at. If that does not work out I would suggest brushing up on your alphabet- there are many combinations of letters and numbers that you will soon be using to make new license plates. Secondly, try using the word orange.

Well maybe it was a little to much swearing but the musical effort is commended life is about taking chances not sitting back and criticising those that do and for those of you that want to place labels I know at least two of those guys are local all there life and all three of them have jobs and are trying to do the right thing

Good way to put it, and I agree. Never judge a book by it’s cover. I like the fact they have jobs and are trying to stay out of trouble.

Matt i went to north end partnership meeting tonight, enitre MCPD was there, KUhn and Hicky. They spoke to a huge group of residents about specialized and targeted enforcement. Kuhn spoke about new city code being brought up next week to stop crime. it was a great meeting. WHy were you not covering? Globe KIMT were there? Instead, you are out promoting a group called Guns and Ammunition??????? at some point you have to realize that you are part of the problem.

Was that a joke? Thank you so much for your dedication! You are well on your way to solving everything that is wrong in Mason City and turning it into the mecca of the midwest! Hell if I knew I could do that just by attending meetings I’d have been going to AA all these years! LMAO! Sorry, you won’t change anything there. Still too many CLOSED MIND BIGOTS! You should also take responsibility for the problems you’re a part and not blame others for idiotic nonsense. Really. You didn’t even point to a certain problem that Matt was the cause of. Shame on you.

Different stroke for different folks I guess. Certainly not my thing but I guess it what certain segment of our youth enjoy but then again I never did like Hard Rock either. Consider it a bunch of gibberish just like this. I too was disappointed that you did not think our meeting pertaining to the very serious problems in the city was important enough for you to attend. Anytime you get a group of concerned people voicing there thought it is constructive and a good thing. Although I am not a huge fan of our council I was somewhat please to hear them say the recognize there is a problem and will try to address it.

AWESOME! Nice to finally see someone making some references to “8 Mile” and Mason City in the same statement even tho its more like “2 Mile” version of 8 Mile from downtown to the north edge of town. Such a shit hole of a town and these pride-n-joy rappers of North Iowa prove it.
