Uhl, Cyclones hungry for more

EUGENE, Ore. – Lisa Uhl is going to London for the Olympic Games, but she is far from satisfied. There was no complacency heading into Thursday’s 5,000-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field. Uhl will compete in the 10,000 meters in the Olympic Games but her competitive nature did not allow for being happy just to compete in London . She finished sixth in the 5k running for Nike/Oregon TC Elite. Her time was 15:24.17.

“Overall I am a little bit disappointed,” Uhl said. “I expected to win the 10,000.” (She finished fourth). I don’t know if there was some kind of high about making the team but I didn’t feel well about how I finished the 10k or how I raced in my 5,000 prelim that other night. Tonight I thought my race tactics were good. I am still on an incline.”

Still, Uhl will march with her USA teammates for the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games. She lives a different life now from her days wearing Cardinal and Gold.

“At Iowa State, I was going to class eight hours a day and then running,” Uhl said. “Now running is my focus out here.”

Iowa State 400-meter hurdler Kianna Elahi was clocked in 58.52 seconds to finish fifth in her preliminary heat. She will placed 21st.

“I felt good through the first six hurdles and then I didn’t hit the next one well,” Elahi said.

Elahi, who has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, will leave Ames as an All-American with a Big 12 championship and as a Drake Relays champion. She is getting married on July 7.

“I never would have thought that I would be in the Olympic Trials when my college career began.”

Iowa State shot putter Christina Hillman finished 15th with a personal-best throw of 53-8 π in the opening round. Just a freshman, the U.S. junior champion will be competing next month in the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Danielle Frere of Muscatine finished 21st for the Cyclones with a best of 51-8 ∏.
