Progress Iowa calls on Congressman Tom Latham to apologize for laughing at the idea of ‘pistol whipping’ the Nuns on the Bus

DES MOINES, IOWA — Progress Iowa today called on Congressman Tom Latham to apologize for laughing at and refusing to stand up to Jan Mickelson’s comments about ‘pistol whipping’ the Nuns on the Bus during his appearance on Mickelson’s radio show on Friday.

When Latham appeared Jan Mickelson’s radio show, Mickelson joked about whether the Congressman had the authority to pull over the touring Nuns on the Bus to pistol whip them. Congressman Latham’s only reaction was laughter, followed by saying ‘It’s always fun to be on your show.’  Follow this link for the full audio.

“It’s never acceptable for anyone to support violence — especially our elected leaders,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “Congressman Latham should apologize and make it crystal clear that he would never condone ‘pistol whipping’ religious sisters.”

Catholic what services are provided that govt doesn’t assist with? Like specific examples. It would cost the govt more money if they had to do the services themselves….like what? Do you mean non-profits as a whole providing services? And the govt does subsidize non-profits with grants, etc. I’m not saying nuns don’t work and provide a useful service. Churches get grants from the federal govt in order to provide a service to their community like feeding the hungry, mentoring youth, etc. Let’s just be clear on the relationship with churches and govt aid, they do get govt assistance. They are allowed to apply for grants like the rest and certainly do.

Nuns on the bus – what a joke. Here we have a bunch of freeloaders who have their food, housing, medical, and extraneous expenses furnished for them. They don’t pay taxes or otherwise contribute to the funding of this country. But yet, they feel qualified to protest govt cuts that they don’t like. My thoughts – let them go out in the real world, get a real job, and face some real issues that would affect their lives. It’s easy to throw stones from the cheap seats when the only thing you have to worry about is… wait a minute, they don’t have any worries. They traded mommy and daddy in for the church. Wow, what a neat way to escape reality.

While I am not a supporter of dissenting religious women (the term “nun” is actually misused here), I can assure you that the religious sisters who are actually being addressed by the Vatican are not freeloaders. These particular women are consecrated lay women who live in community according to the evangelical vows, but their economic support does not come from the Church at all (Cloisters of nuns are sometimes a different story, legally). These communities of women must support themselves with real jobs, support their retired sisters, and file for bankruptcy if they fail — just like everyone else — and without help from the Church. The only real point you have is that some groups get a tax break because they are doing a certain type of work — work that would result in both of us paying higher taxes if they were not doing so, in many cases, for an amount of payment that those of us who do not live in community could afford to do. It is the same reason churches get tax breaks. It would cost the government more money to supply those services if it had to do so itself. I do not support the sisters’ current position, but I fail to see your need to be so negative toward people whose life style you don’t seem to know more about than what you’ve seen in old 1940′s movies.

This is what it’s devolved to in America. Both sides of the sewage filter telling the other how much they stink. Anyone who defends either side of the aisle on every issue is a moron, you wanna pretend to be part of a team that bad? I bet your the same kind of jackoff who doesn’t like someone based on the football team they cheer for. Go to work, take care of your kids, and keep your substance free ideas to yourselves.

By the way, you’re a complete coward if you’re one of the people who love to throw personal insults around at the people posting under their real names while not having the stones to do so yourself. It’s really amazing how many tough guys there are when they get behind a keyboard.

Very good point. Unfortunately that seems to be the majority anymore on both sides. I’ve often said if Bill Clinton would have had a R behind his name instead of a D, republicans would have loved him and vice versa-democrats would have probably hated him.

You know why a lot of you people out there in NIT land think like you do? I’ll tell you why. I know why. You believe that might makes right. What I mean by this, is that until someone stands over you and beats you on the head, subduing you into submission…you’ll never believe anything. You grew up with muscle and force, rather than intellect and curiosity. As a result, unless it literally knocks you over the head, you won’t think it’s real. It’s a tough predicament to be in. As most of society is civil, and there are rights put in place to protect you…your hard headed, obstinate stubbornness will continue. In other words…it’s hopeless for you. A war or a bar fight is about the only thing that will change your mind.

I am sorry but have we now moved to a point in America where someone is required to apologize for the words of others?

Oh wait – this is just political stunt from a liberal slash and burn group trying to score cheap political points.

Bingo. I’ll take back what I’ve said if someone can point me to just one instance of this Matt Sinovic or his organization criticizing someone other than a Republican/Christian/Conservative for anything.

What we really need, Peter L., is one-nut music majors such as yourself to find a hole, crawl in and wait for the revolution.

That is how this guy (executive director) earns his pay. Drumming up stupid stuff to stir the pot and get people to try and hate other people. It makes me appreciate my job as I am grateful I do not have to do that for a living. Some people really are stuck in some bad jobs.

I wonder how ‘Progress Iowa’ feels about the potential for Colorado wildfires to take out the HQ of Focus on the Family? They’re probably giddy.

To paraphrase Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Ayatollah Khomeni and other religious leaders, the wildfires are God’s punishment to the people of Colorado for allowing Focus on the Family to dwell in their midst.

Matt, I have to hand it to you. You provide some really good hotbutton issues on NIT. Endless sources of debate and discussion!

I can’t believe such a heinous comment was made in the first place, but if Tom Latham finds that type of scenario amusing, we need a new congressman…ASAP!
