2 pit bull attacks in Austin, MN this week

Matt Peterson, Austin Daily Herald, Minn. –

Austin police officers have had their hands full with dog attacks this week.

After a pit bull attacked and killed a chihuahua at the new dog park on Sunday morning, police have received three more complaints about overly aggressive dogs in Austin.

An officer went to a home in southeast Austin after a couple reported that a pit bull cornered two people in between a stairway and a house, according to the report. While the report does not list any injuries, the owner of the pit bull, Jacob Redwing, 30, will be served with a potentially dangerous dog warning.

Officers responded to two dog attacks on Monday. In the first, at 11:24 a.m. in the 1800 block of Second Avenue SE, a young child accidentally opened a front door, and a boxer attacked a golden retriever. The 52-year-old woman walking the golden said the boxer attacked her golden as she crossed the homeowner’s driveway. No citations were issued, and the woman sustained minor scratches.

The second altercation on Monday happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. when a rottweiler allegedly attacked a smaller dog. Both dog owners were walking their dogs, which were leashed, when the incident allegedly happened. The rottweiler’s owner, Eric Uher, 27, said his dog did not attack the smaller dog but only pinned it and was trying to play. Uher was also served with a potentially dangerous dog warning.

A potentially dangerous dog warning means if a dog has one more incident, it will be deemed a dangerous dog and placed in the pound.

However, the owner of the pit bull that killed the chihuahua on Sunday, David Davenport, 42, was served with a dangerous dog citation. He will have 14 days to appeal the decision to the Austin City Council. If he loses an appeal or does not appeal, the dog will be euthanized. His pit bull is currently in the city pound.

Just a thought instead of saying a “pitbull” attacked a dog, why not just say “a large dog” or “an 80 lb. male dog” or something to that effect. It doesn’t matter what breed it is, just the fact that a large dog attacked another one and it would prevent dog breed racism…

Yes, but then that wouldn’t be reporting the whole story. Fact of the matter is, it WAS a pit bull. The media should NEVER get into the habit of leaving facts out. I do not want this site to turn into the globe gazette mentality. U are only suggesting that because u are biased to pits. Mentality should always be to tell the truth, the WHOLE truth and nothing but the truth. I could give a shit if people hate pits because of it. Suppressing the truth is far more of a problem for society. You should know that. If you don’t then I would seriously question your mentality.

When any other dog bites, they list it as a larger dog. The media needs to report ALL or no dog bites. I would prefer none since they’re a daily occurance but the only ones you hear of are Pitbull bites. However, a Pitbull is a mixed breed so how do they identify them? 80% are misidentified & are in fact Boxers or Lab mixes.

it was a close fight the chihuahua had the pitbull all the way to the end until the the 80lbs advantage and the lock jaw got em.

Can’t blame the dogs. They are only doing what is bred into them. Blame the people that have them. These dogs should all be treated as a potential dangerous weapon all the time.

But, my pit is a loving family pet, will eat anything, very fond of kids.

Well, here we go again folks !!!!!

I’m sure there were other dog bites over the weekend. Too bad only ones involving Pitbulls make it into the media. Very discriminative of this breed & it’s sad. All dogs bite, not just Pitbulls. Also it says somewhere about a Rottweiler too – another breed that has a bad reputation but are also very sweet dogs.

Nope, as guardians of my home, my husband & my toddler. 🙂
