Camping Trip Ended for Registered Sex Offender by U.S. Marshals

Columbia, SC – Anthony Scott Ebersole, AKA: “Tony” was arrested by the U.S. Marshals at a camp ground in Crescent City, Florida late yesterday afternoon. Ebersole has been on the run from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department since March 1, when he failed to register as a sex offender as required. Lexington County Sheriff’s Department attempted to verify the last known address for Ebersole in Pelion however they were advised he had moved and did not update his sex offender registry. Lexington County exhausted all their leads and requested assistance from Operation Intercept (OPIN), the U.S. Marshals fugitive task force.

OPIN began investigation on the whereabouts of Ebersole and discovered information leading them to believe he was hiding out in a Camp Group in Florida. Acting on this information OPIN contacted their counterparts at the Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force (FRFTF) and requested assistance. On June 5, FRFTF accepted the call for assistance and began surveillance on the Crescent City Camp Ground. Deputy U.S. Marshals and Task Force Officers surrounded the small trailer and verbally ordered Ebersole to exit. Ebersole obeyed the verbal command and was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Putnam County Jail.

“A lifetime sex offender registry requirement was bestowed upon Ebersole in 1981 for a conviction for two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct. The arms of justice will reach you even when you run and hide. Fugitives of this caliber should not be taken lightly. This arrest shows the cooperation with Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and other Deputy U.S. Marshals throughout the nation. Ebersole will ultimately be returned to South Carolina to face his outstanding charges.” stated Kelvin Washington, U.S. Marshal for the District of South Carolina.

Established in 1789, the United States Marshals Service is the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency. In fiscal 2011, the Marshals arrested more than 36,200 federal fugitives, clearing 39,400 felony warrants and arrested 12,144 sex offenders. Marshal’s Service-led task forces like South Carolina’s Operation Intercept arrested 86,400 state and local fugitives, clearing 113,300 felony warrants. Locally, Operation Intercept arrested over 2,500 South Carolina fugitives during that same period.
