Iowa Quaker plant lottery winners to file privacy request to keep identities confidential

Trish Mehaffey, CR Gazette –

CEDAR RAPIDS — An injunction will be filed next week to keep confidential the identities of 20 Quaker plant co-workers who won a $241 million Powerball jackpot, the group’s attorney said Thursday.

The 18 men and two women of “The Shipping 20” each contributed money for the winning ticket, legally creating a constructive trust, Cedar Rapids attorney Joe Day said. That means the person who purchased the ticket is the trustee while the others are beneficiaries, he said, and the lottery can’t legally reveal the names of those beneficiaries.

They chose to take the prize in a lump sum, which means each trust member will receive about $5.6 million after taxes.

The winners, ranging in age from 35 to 64, all live in and around Cedar Rapids and are longtime Quaker employees. They’re members of Local 110 of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union/United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, whose job is to ship out boxes of cereal from the plant.
