Two Charged Following Fatal Des Moines Boating Collision

DES MOINES – The operators of two boats involved in a fatal collision Sunday night on the Des Moines River have been charged with boating while intoxicated (BWI).
Steven Mayo, 54, and Tony Starrett, 46, both of Des Moines, were charged with BWI. Kelly Starrett, 49, of West Des Moines, was fatally injured in the collision and was the brother of Tony Starrett.

Although two people from each boat were thrown into the water by the collision, all were quickly rescued by others on the scene and no other serious injuries were reported. Two people involved in the collision were taken to a Des Moines hospital Sunday evening where they were treated and released.

The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
