Photo of the day: Demolish the Courthouse

Photo sent by an NIT reader, with the following note:

“Snapped this picture just north of St. Ansgar on hwy 105.  Where can I get one?”

(Apparently referring to the Mitchell County Courthouse)

I’m not sure of the construction of the courthouse, so I cannot speak to its integrity or aesthetic quality. However, imagine if Europe had demolished all its old buildings in order to make room for new ones every 150 years or so? Depending on what the building is, I tend to favor demolition and erecting new, because I’ve worked on old houses, and they are often more trouble than they are worth. I know that spiritually, it is bad karma to inhabit the homes of other people as their is something known as spiritual residual energy. Old Courthouses have hanged people, sent them to prison, sent them to asylums and done all sorts of nasty business.

Maybe it is time to build new, but put it in a new location, somewhere away from the negative energy of the past…and declare the new building to be dedicated to Truth, Justice, Compassion, Reason, Safety and Logic…something the old courts of past, had trouble understanding.

Its a beautiful building and should not be demolished. The employees should suck it up and be thankful they have jobs and a place to do them in. The county has not grown by leaps and bounds so therefore I don’t understand why they need so much more space. If that was really the issue the present building could be left where it stands, turned into a museum, and they could build a new building elsewhere. Years ago Hamilton County, IA tore down their courthouse building in order to modernize. What a disgusting disappointment. People are dumb.

Why is it that Iowans have such a deep seated desire to destroy everthing old? Is there no sense of tradition, heritage, or pride in Iowans?

I find such a contrast in Indiana, where 82 of the oringinal 92 structures have been lovingly preserved and in constant use. Buildings dating back to 1844. In my years, I have visited most of them. Wonderful structures created with brick and stone. Marble or wood floors, decorated with wraught iron.
