Golfer Nate McCoy Named Iowa State’s Male Athlete of the Year

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State golfer Nate McCoy has earned his share of awards and honors in his record-setting senior season on the links in 2011-12. He just added another to his resume today.

An All-Big 12 First-Team selection and a Ping All-Central Region pick, the Iowa State Athletics Department named McCoy its Male Athlete of the Year for the 2011-12 athletics season.

The West Des Moines, Iowa native produced arguably the greatest season for a Cyclone golfer in school history this past year. McCoy won two tournaments and finished in the top-10 in eight of 14 tournaments. He also ended the year with a school-record 71.65 stroke average

McCoy helped the Cyclones reach the postseason for the first time since 1999 by receiving a bid to the NCAA Bowling Green Regional. McCoy finished seventh at the regional, earning a spot at the NCAA Championships as the lone individual qualifier in the regional.

McCoy, who was the first Cyclone to make it to the NCAA finals since 1980, tied for 29th out of 156 competitors at the NCAA Championships held at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Ranked 42nd nationally in the final Golfweek ratings, McCoy also broke Iowa State’s 54-hole school record with a 202 at the Hawkeye Invitational. His 65 in the second round was the first 7-under 18-hole round in the history of Iowa State golf.

McCoy earned his degree in communications studies in May and will compete on the Canadian Tour this summer after obtaining his playing card by tying for fifth at qualifying school.
